What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The children will start to get excited again when we plant them in the ground. They are already talking about what they are growing in their gardens at home.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We didn't really understand the difference between fruit and vegetables and now we look in our lunch boxes to see what healthy fruit and vegetables we have for lunch

“At St Joseph's school in Piwakawaka class (New Entrants/Year1) we have been learning about Spring. We were so excited to start growing our Little Garden vegetables, and they are getting bigger. We will combine ours with an older class and plant them outside in the garden when the time is right. Thank you so much for sending them to us.”

The hands on experience of planting and nurturing the Little Garden seedlings has created an opportunity to further support the learning we have done and will continue to do around healthy eating and nutrition. Literacy: Oral language- discussing how to plant the seeds, describing their plants as they grow etc. Writing instructions, writing about their plant. Reading- reading about their plant, vegetable poems and songs. Maths: Measuring, counting etc. Health:

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Planting out the seeds, observing the changes and growth, eating the produce. Continuing the above cross- curricular learning.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? This encouraged children to learn more about their vegetable/ herb, to grow it and then hopefully eat what they produce.

“It was great having the plants, game and online resources. I had already had seed kits the same as this (I can't remember who sponsored them) but without all the hype and build up- which I didn't think was necessary. I didn't agree with the secrecy aspect. At the same time that we were planting, we were also teaching the NZ Police programme ";Keeping Ourselves Safe"; which teaches that good surprises are fine, but secrets aren't. The whole story of a secret society and that people had stopped growing vegetables didn't resonate, or ring true, for me.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Cooking at home with the family

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? While we were able to educate the students on healthy eating and nutrition it would be nice to also wait until the veges are harvested and then answer this question. We are hoping to have some sort of shared kai using our harvest.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We used this for writing, reading and science. Every time we did learning around it the whole class was engaged.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The class went home and started doing their own garden. They know what to do in the future with gardening and looking after our bodies.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? With students growing their own vegetables they are so keen to eat them after and also keen to try the vegetables they had not heard of. We discussed what they need to grow and matched it to us. We need 'water, sunshine, good food (soil) to grow

“FANTASTIC BOX!! The class absolutely loved the box. We first started with writing what could be inside the 'Mystery Box'. As a class we then opended it and had great conversations around the items. The class shared their prior experience as well with growing plants. They all wrote their 'application letter' and got presented their budges which was VERY COOL and they are still wearing them. Each student planted their vegetable. Very cool hearing 'Oh I love that vegetable'. We discussed how planets best grow and what we need to grow. Every morning they all go to the plants to see what has grown and water theirs. This box has provided endless learning and 'WOW' to the class. Parents are also coming in to see what is happening as they have heard so much about it.”

Made them aware of what is out there that they haven't been exposed to. Being brave to taste new things. The nutrition value of vegetables and herbs.

Science - looking at the development of a seed Reading - completing the code (use of alphabet) Writing - predicting what will the seed do when planted. One was put in water too so that the children could see the seed germinate.
