Localised school curriculum has used the concept of 'future' and we have been tracking the progress of plants and how they change over time. We have also been looking at how people ate in the past so we can learn from it and make good eating choices in ou

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We are still using the kit. I think it could easily be incorporated into many of our local curriculum concepts.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? It has broadened their knowledge of the variety of vegetables, and herbs.

“Really enjoying it - especially the online content. I would have liked the 24 Little Garden League characters to be in a bigger or more detailed picture so that we could learn their names more easily. The project is ongoing and we are still growing the seedlings. South Island is later for gardening due to frosts.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? Strong links to Science (health, living world, plant growth, water cycle), Maths (measuring heights, time to grow, volume of water), Writing (process of planting and growing a seed), Reading, (instructions, research).

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? The children took their plants home and so are growing their own garden at home and tracking this with photos that they are sharing with school.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Some children had little idea about the garden to plate process of vegetables. This kit promoted wonderful discussions about healthy meals and made them realise how easy it is to grow their own food.

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? The obvious areas were health and science but it lent into our procedural writing and maths as well. We were able to link a lot into this.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Life cycles, allergies, cooking, growing plants in different environments

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Children were more motivated to try new vegetables. They were also more excited about seeing any fruit or vege in their lunchboxes (we googled the way a range of different foods were grown).

“The students LOVED this school kit! The excitement around being in a special club with a badge etc was a huge thing for the children in my class and they really bought into it. They have taken their roles very seriously and have learned a lot about vegetables and plants in general.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? As stated above, we used the kit as a practical way of combining what we had learned earlier in the term about looking after our environment - the soil cycle, making compost, etc.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? Encouragement from the children to talk about and share their gardening experiences with those at home as well as those at school.

In what ways has this kit improved students awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? We didn't formally use the kit in this way, although we did talk about the vegetables that we liked and knew.

“My Y0/1 children loved this kit. We connected to our topic study of looking after our environment by growing our own food, rather than the healthy eating side. The children enjoyed the codes, names and playing modified games using the plant characters. They took their plants home at the end of the term and I am getting comments and photos of how well their plants are growing now that they're in their garden. They loved getting their badges and it was fantastic to see the way they supported each other as each badge was awarded.”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We talked about life-cycles for science, what plants need to grow. We did measurement and estimation when talking about plant growth. Lots of fun art-based activities were also created. Writing time covered recounts, instructions and reports.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We will cover 'plants' again early next year to reinforce learning. It gave the younger children a chance to be involved in taking care of the school garden and hopefully they will realize how special it is and want to keep being involved in caring for it

It has made the children aware that there are things you can eat and they can taste just as nice as shop brought food. The lunch doesn't have to be a 'snack pack' from the dairy. “Our Little Garden from sponsored by New World has been amazing. We set our garden up in the class and the children loved watching all the plants grow, especially as they grew at different rates. Heaps of excitement when they popped through the soil. The special part for the class was taking the seedlings out when they were big enough and planting them in the school garden. Many children from the class regularly check on the plants! Our next step is to watch our seedlings and have a tasting time when they are ready. This should be interesting as a number of the children have not tried these foods before. Thanks to everyone involved from us :)”

In what ways did this kit give opportunity for cross-curricular learning? We enjoyed reading vegetable jokes and doing lots of talking. What is the strongest vegetable? Muscle sprout. Science- talking about living things and what they need.

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? More about healthy eating. The science around growing. Also composting etc. We have a school worm farm and are working on adding to our garden space.
