How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? From the start of the unit they didn't know a lot of vegetables and what they looked and know a lot more now.
We had such a great time in our class of Year 2/3 with the Little Garden League Kit. They were super keen to be members of a 'secret club' . Some took their seeds to nurture in their own gardens at home and a few planted theirs in our class garden patch. We even did some learning with te reo Maaori words of the vegetables. There was lots of engagement and an awesome kit to have.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The children are more aware of why vegetables are important for our health and that there is a wide variety to choose from. Becoming aware that it is important to have a go and try new things because you may find new vegetables to enjoy.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The children were able to name more plants and they often looked for these in the supermarket.
This proved to be a great asset as it aligned nicely with our inquiry topic on improving our school environment. The children enjoyed planting and making predictions about what might happen. The children learned that not all foods come straight from the supermarket, there is a process involved.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Talking of seasonal veg, each has a nutritional element and then looking at our lunch boxes too.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I was surprised at my children lack if vegetable knowledge. Not only not identifying what I would have called 'common' veg, but unable to talk about the growing properties of even potatoes.
Using the science curriculum of fair testing, we tried growing the vegetables with different criteria: inside, in soil, only jiffy pots, into garden. Great differing results using the same seeds. With varying successes, we recorded our results and questioned the differences. The kit itself offered learning about the various vegetables, which I was very surprised my children had limited knowledge about.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? As well as looking at the food pyramid we talked about processed and natural food and where food comes from. We have a fruit/veg break in the morning and now all students bring some in to eat.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? It certainly helped students identify different types of vegetables they hadn't been exposed to and to see what types they like.
My small class of year 0's had a great time learning about the food pyramid and this kit helped with identifying vegetables and learning what plants need to grow. We grew the little gardens in class and then these were taken home to plant as they were getting too big. We also planted many in our school gardens.
