In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? The Little Garden kit was a great introduction to healthy eating and eating a rainbow of colours. The children went home talking about what they were growing so were sharing the healthy eating message with their whanau.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? When we went to visit Harold I was impressed with how many vegetables/fruit the children were able to name when talking about good food for our body. This definitely improved over the course of our unit.
The children were so excited to learn that they were going to be growing plants. We spent time investigating what plants needed to grow before getting started. The excited mounted when the children knew they were members of a 'secret' club and got a badge.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? This reinforced some vegetables the children already knew about and introduced some new ones.
Many of the children had done these before but thoroughly enjoyed doing them again. We have previously grown bean plants so they were keen to grow some more vegetables.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? My year two children were already fairly knowledgeable about healthy eating with a very positive attitude towards eating fruit. We focussed on the importance of a balanced diet and incorporating more veggies into it.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? The children were all reasonably good at identifying different vegetables, but had no idea about the herbs so that was a great learning opportunity.
My year two learners found this school kit super engaging. They couldn't wait to set up a special place in the classroom and start growing the plants.

How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? Lots! Kids loved learning about new vegetables and plants. Some even mentioned they have been planting at home.
Kids have loved being part of this planting, germinating and planting process. I think looking ahead for next year I would use this kit in another term other than term 4. Just because how busy term 4 and then growing/looking after veges over the summer can prove difficult.

In what ways has this kit improved student awareness of nutrition and healthy eating? Our plants are not ready to try yet however they have shared recipes from home that they would like to try.
How successful was this kit in promoting student ability to identify vegetables? I was surprised with the knowledge that tamariki already had about vegetables when we started this kit.
My class of Year 2 tamariki loved this kit. We held off starting until the beginning of the term as traditionally in Canterbury you don't plant until Show Weekend. The excitement and mystery that comes with being part of the Little Garden League was a real highlight for the class and they have taken their mission very seriously. Our seedlings have now been transplanted to the school garden for our whānau and the community to enjoy over summer. Learning has continued as the kids tend to the garden and measure their plants their plants to check which grow quicker. Building on what they have learnt the class have designed a sunflower circle to feed bees and birds next year as well as for them to play in next term in Term 1.
