How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The students were able to use the pepeha from the kit and create their own. This allowed for them to get an understanding of their lives and how it linked to the area around them.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? At first I was nervous because there was a lot in the pack and I had no idea where to start. Once I figured out how to start I was able to link it all together and I was confident in delivering the curriclum to the class.

“Loved the way it was set up and how you could just use parts of it. Definitely took me a little while to get my head around it but overall we enjoyed exploring the kit and making connections to our NZ Histories unit this term. We could take it a bit at a time and grab what we wanted from the kit.”

“This was a great kit that provided plenty of opportunities to dig deeper into NZ History. Each group had a card and dived deeper into it and shared back to the class. I do not feel we scratched the surface on what this kit has to offer but we have held onto the box to revisit.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I am confident to teach NZ history. I completed a Te Whare Watauga course snd the history learnt in that compared to learning in the kit.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? This has allowed us to research, explore and discuss key events or happenings that has helped shaped NZ. Discussions and collaboration were abundant. I was able to relate personally with some of the refugee stories. The photos were fab.

“The kit was great. It provoked a lot of teaching and learning looking at life in NZ from a lot of different perspectives. We took it further by going to the MTG to learn about our local history and Ngati Kahungunu. We have studied a range of cultures. We will continue to learn about NZ history when we attend Camp Wellington.”

“I have changed teaching subjects from Social Science to Maths but still wanted to continue to use school kits. So for this kit I dipped in and out of activities and took advantage of opportunities to apply to a maths context. The Mawhera Land purchase in particular is our local area. We explored purchasing power at the time of the land purchase, using local newspapers. Inflation and land values currently and over time. Students also explored measurement, mapping and navigation; looking into the extent of the land purchase and routes across the pass, linked to this story. I will be looking at different aspects of this kit in the future. My current teaching area requires a bit more research and thought on how they can be incorporated into high school maths, but worth the effort and the kit gives me an awesome start point. Because I wanted to focus on connections to maths I did not use the student facing website but used some of the ideas to create my own thinglink with maths context for exploring the topic.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It definitely gave me confidence in delivering NZ history that is not necessarily Maori. A lot of information we have that we take for granted that students will have been exposed to but they haven't.

“My students loved being able to use the website but they were not instantly directed to the deeper questions until I realised where they had to look. Very time intensive to do it justice so required a term and a half. Some great outcomes and interesting history. A clearer teacher links required for the items as some I could not even work out so answers would be great. Papers Past was difficult to use.”

The resources accompanying the kit and the concept of pepeha is something students could really relate to and could acquire/generate or replicate from our own area. This is a great resource

“The kit and the supporting resources were very professional. The quality of the items in the kit is outstanding, authentic and motivating for students. How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? We really enjoyed the code breaking of the pepeha and how our learning of our own pepeha has helped us to decipher others. This would be something we could expand on in future resources. Also, it sparked lots of questions which we can continue to research

“He kino te pai tēnei rauemi! This resource is the best! It is engaging, motivating and he nui te puna rangahau! So much information not only for the tamariki but for us kaiako too. We found the kit really easy to use, very intuitive! I found very valuable the index of all the cards and which rōhe each card belonged to. This made it easier to hone in on Kāi Tahu rauemi.”
