How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It has given me lots of ideas to build on. Also where the children are able to drive the learning themselves.

“Absolutely fabulous. With the histories curriculum coming out next year this needs to be supplied to every teacher in New Zealand. The children were amazed at some of the items. Black Panther movement, Springbok tour, Rainbow Warrior to name a few. The resources and time that must have gone into it would be incredible. Well done to everyone involved. I am reminded of the quote ‘if we don’t learn from history we are destined to repeat it. ‘”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I want to relook at these stories and look at our own nearby stories. Being descended from local iwi in this area with strong historical knowledge and roots to the whenua, I want to peruse the telling of these narratives in ways which will engage students

To be fair, we had a lot of disruptions with sick students and teachers which meant I had a different class everyday. I found it hard to get momentum with this kit but believe it is too valuable resource to leave parked so I want to have another go next y

“This is a very comprehensive resource and it took us time to try and get our head around what to do and where to go. I found it very tricky to monitor the different directions children embarked on and found that we didn't get an outcome for everybody. I need to invest more time to give some structure on how I will manage it in my class next year.”

Our Chinese students were fascinated to learn about some of the stories from Chinese immigrants who came to NZ many years ago.

“This kit is a wonderful resource, with lots of interesting and engaging activities and artefacts for the students to explore. We did find that the level of learning was perhaps a little high for some of our year 5-6 learners and those students needed more support and guidance. Some of the artefacts and journeys were not complete online which was disappointing for some of the students. On the whole the resource is fantastic and gives the students a great starting point to begin exploring the history of Aotearoa NZ.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? It provided a hands-on oppurtunity to deliver the curriculum the way it should be done. It has given me a lot of confidence to deliver this well going into 2023.

“This kit is absolutely fantastic. I really like how there were so many engaging, interesting stories about what had happened in such a wide variety of places throughout New Zealand. The places acted as fantastic prompts for critical thinking about the events that had occurred and allowed many students to apply this thinking to other places in our local area.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? It has - our school has switched from a traditional House system to one that our local Iwi had input into, this kit has inspired me to explore the history of our area further both from the Maori perspective and the arrival of the Pakeha.

During the first week of the year, our new students go on a bus trip around our locale, visiting the places our school haka talks about, hearing their stories.

“I loved the breadth of this kit and the huge variety of primary and secondary sources students were able to draw on. Having the local voices brought authenticity to the learning. I found that the lessons on the Polynesian Panthers and Gay Rights only scratched the surface for my students, who took their learning far beyond the kit. My students did find the website a little confusing and didn't go into the resources with the depth I wanted. To counter this, I took the resources off the website and reframed them in Schoology (similar to Google Classroom), and my students worked through that. Once I sorted a system that worked for us, I absolutely loved the kit, thank you.”
