How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? This is a great unit to use. You can use it to inspire as well as a stand-alone for classes that are not research inclined.

What was the impact of knowing the stories in this kit were developed in collaboration with their iwi/whānau/community? I think that hearing these stories created the links to the learning that we always strive for and that we teach all the time. The stories were engaging and effective in showing the particular parts in history as well.

“We had a great unit teaching this. My students loved the hands on artefacts and the research prompts. This I feel, was the most effective way to teach this unit as my class loves research and questioning.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Initially we chose be picture and learned of the waitaki area then we became more strategic. The kids loved the unveiling of the image and how the mihi disclosed more.

“the students usually talked about the picture itself before actually trying to understand that it could be a part of the some information that had happened. We could only go through a few of them . We might be exploring more when we get some time . A good learning for me personally. I wish I had more time to understand the history better.”

“I found the physical kit to be really good, it provided students with questions about the events which happened in out past (we covered the land marches and te reo march) and gave them any ways to create their own inquiries. The only part that I thought was a little confusing was the website, students had to be explicitly guided around to ensure they understood what they doing and or some students found the format hard to read the information on the chromebooks.”
