The children were engaged by the fact that they were real stories about real people. Children developed questions for our local iwi about our stories and how they connect to the stories shared in the school kit.

“Beautiful imagery and stories that were interesting for our tamariki. Linked strongly with our learning about pepeha and our local communities. The way the resources were presented was enticing and engaging. The children saw the images as a taonga and enjoyed being able to handle them (rather than digital resources).”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Definitely great to have these local stories. We have been exploring our area a lot recently and this added to the NZ context.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I feel like this is a really cool topic and approach to the topic. Will definitely be incorporating it in to the plan for all classes next year.

“The kit was really easy to use from a teacher and a student perspective. We learnt some really cool things and we all really enjoyed the pepeha approach to the kit. My class was quite small (about 10 in the whole class) and this allowed me to work closely with the students to understand what was required.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The kit definitely started me thinking about the stories that we know and how to support other schools to develop a resource developed with consultation with manawhenau from our 2 marae.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? it enlightened the process of using artefacts to unpack the events and issues that occured in our past. Then looking across multiple sources, we could see the difference of understanding from various groups. Stories were a fantastic way to share viewpoint

“Really enjoyed connecting pepeha to places around our local area that were included in the kit. Some very interesting resources for discussion, but I did have to adapt quite a lot for my class being a year 3/4 group. This will be a resource that I use for teaching for years to come.”

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? Having the resources at hand and being able to assist with telling the stories of the past along with creative writing from our students. Some students reached out and contacted family to find out about their knowledge.

“We used this kit within a collaborative space with 60 students. We used the postcards, the artefacts and the website extensively and allowed learners choice over the topic that most piqued their interest. We were able to differentiate the learning for our kids based on their needs and directed them towards tasks we felt were appropriate for them as individuals. The quality of this kit, the materials and the website is phenomenal. A tremendous amount of knowledge and passion went into its creation and it shows. We love that this is a kit that we will still be able to use in the future.”
