How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? Motivating and inspiring. I would def use this model. As a History teacher I was excited by the tasks and the resources.

How has this kit impacted your confidence in delivering the new Aotearoa NZ's histories curriculum content? I def feel more confident in the delivery of the new curriculum. The task does not seem as daunting and I am excited to continue with the journey.

“I have just started using the kit with my two Year 10 classes. They were excited by the resources and started off engaged. There were a few cards which were not up and running. It was also disappointing to see my girls struggling with the literacy component of the tasks. As soon as they saw they had to read they became disengaged. This is a real reflection of the drop in their desire and ability to read. I also felt the levels at which some of the tasks were pitched were a little difficult. I would like to discuss this with you in more detail.”

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? The model used was very user friendly and definitely helped us realise that there are examples that can be found in our immediate area.

The kit took away the misconception that in order to be able to teach about NZ histories we as Kiako needed to know about them ourselves. “We have been exploring the Something Happened Here kit and decided to take our time and go deeper into the places that had more significance to our local area. The kit has provided us with a framework for other places in our area and we have used the structure (pepeha and then go deeper) with other locations. The kit is very well put together- we appreciate all the mahi that has gone into creating and sharing it.”

“The tool itself contained beautiful resources and alligned with the curriculum really well. I found it a bit challenging for my Y5/6 students as the language and concepts were rather high level. Also the reliance on computers posed a bit of a problem as we don't have enough for all students. It was useful in creating teachable moments though. For example I discovered that my students were not faniliar with the concept of Polynesian and so we were able tk talk about that and I planned other classes to support that learning.”
