“Easy to use material. Was slgihtly harder than expected. Year 7-8 managed the first column easily but thenext got a lot harder. Needed sme more teaching around how to use the sites - maybe some video instructions? Some of the material was very difficult to read (even for an adult) due to handwriting. Maybe have a transcript easily accessible”

“The students enjoyed using this kit. The availability of support material was a bonus, as the students got a buzz out of handling artefacts. I had to do a lot of pre-loading as the research and interpretation skills needed quite a bit of work prior to starting the kit. Once underway the students maintained interest for sustained periods.”

“This kit was very interesting and brought up many discussions. It is a bit hard to get your head around the teaching sequence of the different resources. If there was an overview or sequence teachers could print that would help with managing the lessons. Students(Year 6) needed teacher support to go through activities properly and did get 'lost' a few times. Much better as a whole class activity/ discussion.”

Our tamariki identified that there are limited resources about our local histories and are interested in creating a kit of their own.

How has this kit motivated you to explore the history or your local area? Could you use this model? I would love to use this model again next year, but I feel I may need to stream it and possibly start as a whole class to model exactly what we need to do. Although it does take quite a long time, so I will need to rethink how I structure it as we just do

I feel I definitely need more time with the kit in order for it to influence my confidence - especially as I was not born in NZ. I would need to explore all the different resources carefully and piece together the stories a bit more.

The kids definitely respected this and the stories more so than if it was not a collaboration of these special people's stories.

“This box was so incredibly exciting to open and look at. There were so many amazing, intricate details and evidence pieces. I was very excited to show the kids. I struggled a little with finding each piece of evidence for each story - I ended up grouping them for the kids in different packets so that they could take the pack with them else they were never going to be able to find each piece of evidence needed. They enjoyed looking at the physical evidence so much. I have a year 7 accelerant class, and even they found it quite tricky to answer all the questions from the clues. It really took a very long time to go through the 3 stories and answers, not allowing time for them to get through very many. Perhaps they need to be shortened somehow or given a few more hints as to what they could find or how to find it.”
