“Such An awesome kit to begin my “school kit” journey with so as a small town school that has a lot to do with our local Beach students were fascinated by the amount of trash we found on our quick walk to the beach, one chilly but clear mid-morning. Getting up close and personal with some sea life bought in by the overnight tide was an experience in its self for some city slickers we’ve had love to the area.”

What future learning opportunities have arisen from this kit? We spent a lot of time looking into the water cycle and how there is a finite amount of fresh water on our planet. It was great to leap into gathering statistical information and presenting it in mathematics.

How has this kit impacted on your class culture? Definite reduction in waste brought in lunch boxes. Some have changed their family's buying habits e.g. buying a big bag of chips instead of a multipack that is more expensive and more waste is produced.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? We developed an understanding of how litter/pollutants actually end up in our waterways and it doesn't matter where the waste starts its journey. We also know that reducing our waste in the first instance is the best way we can help.

In what ways did this kit impact student attitude towards environmentalism? This went along side a full term unit in sustainability. The visuals of the rubbish in the bellies of the animal posters brought a lot of discussion. I have noticed the children picking up rubbish at lunchtime.

“This was an excellent resource. We also combined our unit with our new entrant class and enlisted the help of Porirua City Council who provided us with more rubbish bags, gloves and pickers. We cleaned up a local waterway as this goes to our Porirua harbour. We talked about being kaitiakitanga. The children were really worried about all the rubbish that would end up in the environment and in our sea and how the sea animals would think this is kai and how it makes them really sick.”
