But actually it was lots of fun and I was surprised at how much rubbish we found." -Nikau "It was such a good trip. Initially, my class did not understand why we would be needing to go on a trip to our local beach at Mount Maunganui to pick up rubbish. But, once we had so much more understanding it was such a valuable trip. The children said it was one of their favourite experiences! Thanks so much for the fabulous kit and giving us the eagerness to get out into our local community. The discussions and feedback from parents and children afterwards was hugely positive. Thanks so much!

Great kit that supported our inquiry-based learning around the water cycle and the impacts pollution has on the ocean - and therefore the impacts of pollution on the water cycle. The gloves, bag and posters were great resources to support authentic and hands-on learning.

Halswell School, Te Kura o te Tauawa closely identifies with awa-'Te Tau-o-awa-a-Maka' (Nottingham Stream) and Huritini (Halswell River), so using the 'Rasterbator' giant jigsaw mapping tool helped our tamariki make connection between our local taonga waterways and the causes of effects of sea pollution. We connected this School Kit to 'Plastic Free July' and will have an awa clean-up in late July. The sourced TED-Ed videos were very informative! Nga mihi nui, thank you so much!

We loved having the equipment to use to clean up the beach. It added importance to the task and the children took it very seriously. They loved exploring the rubbish afterwards and categorizing it, and commenting on reasons why it would be on the beach.

A subgroup fo children carried out a beach cleanup as part of our inquiry: Cirizenship - Caring for our marine environment. The students went snorkeling on 2 different days in a Marine reserve and a non protected area. They contrasted what they saw in both places. A group used cleanup kit resources to clean up a third area of local (non protected) beach. They made some generalisations about the types of rubbish they found. They made a piece of art with selected pieces of rubbish and presented their work to the syndicate. For part of the Matariki celebrations, the senior syndicate also did a cleanup around school grounds (but needed extra gloves etc, about 180 students).
