“What a fantastic kit! Our tamariki were highly engaged in brainstorming ways to help our community. The kit provided some excellent resources to support their thinking and made the learning tangible. By outlining a range of roles in the kit, students could successfully analyse the benefit of delegating certain jobs to different people. This kit effectively supported students' understanding of the community and how the can be active participants.”
“I have not had the chance to complete the kit this term but have put plans in place to use it as a base for my teaching next year. It is a wonderful kit and very greatful for the opportunity to use it.”
“The kit was great. Our most successful action was from a small group of girls who decided they wanted to set up a breakfast club at our school. They researched it all themselves and emailed providers. Here they are in their Xmas finery with 3 younger students who are in training to take over when they leave at the end of next year.”
“The students were all actively engaged in the SVA Community Guardian's Kit. They organised themselves in to groups and came up with options for a community cleanup. These were then voted on and one was chosen. The students then organised the day, involving parents and trailers, etc. A great day was had by all. There was a lot of learning and the students are proud of their community, and are more aware of community activities that they can organize.”
“We had a ball cleaning up our school grounds. The children loved the badges, although it was hard to group them in the different categories. We just went hammer and nails with our end-of-year clean-up.”
“We have been very fortunate to be part of the Ōpāwaho (Heathcote) River initiative where we have been part of supporting and investigating the 'health' of the river. This started through our connection being an Enviro-school. We have investigated the Ta Tuna Tāone - urban eel both the longfin and shortfin eels. Students also investigated the invertebrates of the waterway as well as what can cause sedimentation/pollution of their local waterway. We have started (and continue to look after) planting along the
Ōpāwaho (Heathcote) River. We have also assisted with planting in the Mokihi Gardens area. As part of SVA we have placed blue fish/eels beside stormwater drains around our local area. to remind our community that everything that goes down the drains ends up in the river and ultimately the sea. The only downside of this was sourcing battery powered hammer drills! It has been an amazing journey for our students, especially knowing they can (and have) made a difference in their local environment.”
“We had a fantastic day out helping our community! Was awesome to see the children in the planning process and the reflection at the end. The kits are easy to follow and have everything you have! This is my second year doing this kit and think it is fab :slightly_smiling:”
