“This kit was fantastic and enjoyed by our year 7 and 8 students. Our students took a lead around the school, being big buddies, ensuring kindness and becoming more aware of what is happening for others around them and the wider school community. We will continue to use this resource.”
“Our classroom decided to do a trapping Library for our community. We made over 70 T rex traps and gave them out to those who liked one. We sent out invites first, the students made them and hand delivered them to the community. When then set up display boards with information on why it is important to trap. Then people got to take a trap home. The students also offered to clear and reset traps also if people wanted them to. Was a really successful project for the class to be part of.”
“This was great. My year 2s enjoyed taking on the role of kaitiaki of our school and surrounds. They did general clean ups then worked hard on coming up with ways to encourage native birds into our bush area. Bird housee have been built and are starting to attract some birds. The children have enjoyed making a difference”
“We have been very fortunate to be part of the Ōpāwaho (Heathcote) River initiative where we have been part of supporting and investigating the 'health' of the river. This started through our connection being an Enviro-school. We have investigated the Ta Tuna Tāone - urban eel both the longfin and shortfin eels. Students also investigated the invertebrates of the waterway as well as what can cause sedimentation/pollution of their local waterway. We have started (and continue to look after) planting along the
Ōpāwaho (Heathcote) River. We have also assisted with planting in the Mokihi Gardens area. As part of SVA we have placed blue fish/eels beside stormwater drains around our local area. to remind our community that everything that goes down the drains ends up in the river and ultimately the sea. The only downside of this was sourcing battery powered hammer drills! It has been an amazing journey for our students, especially knowing they can (and have) made a difference in their local environment.”
“We used the kit to complete a community project at our local kindergarten. The official resources we were sent really motivated the students and helped us organise the day. We were very well prepared and all the students understood their role in the volunteer project. We helped at our local kindergarten, completing maintenance, cleaning and odd jobs. A core group of students also had the opportunity to assist the kindergarten children with their learning programme.
My students shared their project on their 'Odyssey' night with project boards and vlogs. They learned about empathy and service.”
“Fantastic resource. Our theme was thank you to the community. The kids planned and completed a free car was for the staff. A high tea for the support staff and thank you /merry xmas cards &; choccie to the neighbours. Highly recommend this resource. Thank you.”
“AWESOME School Kit - you have done it again! What an incredible journey. Students walked to the local shops, completed a scavenger hunt, had fish and chips on the beach, a beach clean up and lastly met with D.O.C. to discuss ways that we could help the community. After brainstorming and creating a collaborative google map they decided that a weta hotel could help - so this is what we did! Students researched types of hotels/ contacted the local kindergarten/ D.O.C..... so much learning took place during this process. It was great to see students working on a collaborative task that could make a difference to their environment. Students created a brochure for The Department of Conservation, gifted weta hotels to the Kindergarten, Deep Creek Reserve, Awakau Wetland and our school. Students also put tracking tunnels down at school, to see what was coming into our area and possum monitors. This week students will be presenting their information to the school. Thanks heaps!”
