What was the community impact of your volunteering project? We wanted to make a connection with the elderly from our community. We didn't want them to feel isolated so we wrote letters about ourselves to create a connection.

What type of project did your class undertake? Staying in Touch from Afar
Our tamariki were keen to start their own projects from home e.g., gardening duties, lawn mowing duty for elderly neighbours. As a class, we contacted a local rest home but unfortunately, due to Covid 19 restrictions we were unable to visit. We did however spend time researching ideas and a small group of students wanted to put together 'care-packs' and the others wrote letters, poems and will continue sometime this term to send artwork for their walls. It's been a great opportunity for tamariki to give back to others and the importance to look after our kaumatua and kuia.

What type of project did your class undertake? Water Based Project
We used this kit to encourage an ownership and pride in our area based around our river. It meant we looked at how groups formed and how we can be part of a group.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? Our tamariki did chores around their homes in exchange for cans of food as payment. The jobs needed to be above and beyond their everyday chores. We then gathered all the cans and donated it to a local family charity- home builder in Warkworth. They then

We loved this kit it helped create a sense of community within our school and wider community which the tamariki needed especially in our recent COVID times. It also challenged the students to think outside of the box and put themselves in other people’s shoes.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The rest home residents were very grateful and expressed how excited they were to receive letters from the kids. This helped them with feeling less lonely especially due to not being able to see their family during this difficult time.

Our class wrote letters to the rest home down the road as this rest home weren't allowed visitors at the time during covid. They really enjoyed participating and were super engaged.

What was the community impact of your volunteering project? The purpose of our letters were to make a connection with an Elderly person. Students wrote well planned and though out letters which showed an interest in someone they haven't yet met. The fundraising will help with emergency accommodation for families

What type of project did your class undertake? Fundraising, Staying in Touch from Afar
Year 6 students who participated in SVA last year made a proposal to their new class members to complete an SVA project. After going through the kit, the class were equally torn between wanting to fundraise money for a charity, and write letters to elderly members of our community who may be lonely in Rest Homes. This stemmed from students talking about their parent's jobs in Rest Home's and the stories they heard, alongside wanting to help people affected by Covid-19. The class planned and did the Math (&; the cooking &; assembling) for a Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser at school for the Women's Refuge. They also wrote a letter to the elderly each to be sent to Rest Homes in our community. The project isn't fully finished, so the catering &; celebration will be later on, but the students have enjoyed the planning and acting process. When they receive responses from the charity and some replies to their letters I imagine they will feel more empowered. This kit allowed my students to shine in areas that aren't always available to us in the classroom. I will continue to do this kit in the future when it suits the cohort I am teaching.

SVA study army kit helped support my students as they undertook personal inquiries with an action to support kaitiakitanga and the sdg's. The kit helped them to establish their strengths and roles. The cards and printed material were great springboards. Personally we did not use the buttons and felt they were unnecessary. Once again school kit delivers engaging, relevant content that is rich in opportunities for critical thinking and service.
