“The children's faces were an absolute picture, when we opened up the kit, they knew it was about baking, but had not idea that they were going to use vegetables in the cake! Once they had got over their initial shock of adding the vegetables, they had an absolute blast. So much rich learning went on, in all areas of the curriculum. There was rich language discussion, Maths measuring, Science and Technology. We followed up with seeing what other vegetables we could add to our recipes and how we could make recipes more healthy. A number of the children continued at home with their families and brought in samples of different cakes that they had tried, some not as successful as others! Thank you for a fabulous learning experience for the children.”

“This kit was FANTASTIC in all aspects. We changed it around slightly and ended up doing an investigation with a group rather than the whole class. The group of children struggle to work independently and 2 are ESOL so this task was perfect for them to have guidance from the teacher and also a learning support teacher. Everyone really enjoyed the task and it made them aware of their eating habits and how you can use vegetable/fruit substitutes in baking”

“We included the vegie cake kit as part of a wider study around food technology, healthy eating and the power of advertising. Students really loved the activities we did in connection with the kit. We conducted experiments into chemical reactions before we started creating our cakes. The made multiple versions of veggie cakes which they shared with others, got some feedback and had another go at making an adjusted recipe. They learnt about the role the ingredients played in how the cake turned out. Most groups improved the texture and taste of their cakes following feedback from their peers.”

“My Year 4 & 5 kura loved making the vegetable cakes and we are lucky enough to have an oven in our class, so that really helped. My kids loved the challenge of trying to incorporate as many veges as they could within the ratios and it was great to see their reactions when they tried their cakes. Lots were very surprised they couldn't taste the veges. Not only did they learn about chemical reactions, but learning to co-operate, compromise and relate to each other. What I really liked about his kit is the children got to create and bake quite early on, as sometimes there is a lot of information/activities to cover first in the kits. I'd definitely recommend it to other schools.”
