One of the aims of Waipā Networks was to provide enough material for every student to have a hands-on learning experience. Do you feel this was achieved? No
How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? Yes
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? “It works! We fixed it! No breaks this time!”
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? The copper tape broke easily, which became a benefit is the students could fault-find and fix the circuit themselves. Through this exploration they learned the importance of a closed circuit.

Learning how circuits work and how energy flows through a circuit is a good way to help young people understand that electricity can be dangerous Agree
Did you students enjoy seeing stories that related to landmarks in their local Waipā area? Yes
How did the activity help students make connections between circuit theory and real-world applications? The best connection was with the use of switches.
This kit is a fabulous and easy to use resource for my year 7/8 classroom. It enabled my students enjoy success with their hands-on learning in order to make the most of this science module. Well done School Kits, we loved this kit!

What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? Parallel circuits were harder to make than series.
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? Students were able to identify the key components of simple and series circuits and what was needed for parallel circuits too.

Did you students enjoy seeing stories that related to landmarks in their local Waipā area? Yes
How did the activity help students make connections between circuit theory and real-world applications? They were able to watch how other classrooms made their own light projects to inspire them in future.
Fantastic resource for middle and senior school, hands on for a range of learners. Easy step by step directions with plenty of surpass materials to use if need be. A great way to begin the journey to understanding how to build circuits and understand the interconnectedness of electricity and the world today.

How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? Applied the concepts of a circuit to their prior learning.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? The power can't get through cos the copper tape isn't connected.
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? They learn best by physically doing. Going through each step and adding components to make a bulb glow enabled them to explain their ideas more easily.

How did the activity help students make connections between circuit theory and real-world applications? We had talked about electricity versus solar so the 2 kits helped them apply it to the power source in their own homes.
Our science focus was on forces and energy sources . We learned about these different types of energy - elastic, air pressure, c02 batteries, solar energy and so it was wonderful to be able to access all the components of an electrical circuit unit for each child. Some of them found the corners of the copper tape tricky. It reinforced the solar car construction effectively too.

How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? They were able to think outside the square in some situations to rectify their mistakes.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? Why won't this work?
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? It made a circuit very easy to build, not fiddly with wires etc. Easy to add a switch component or battery etc. Too easy!

How did the activity help students make connections between circuit theory and real-world applications? It exposed them a lot to real-life applications, something they wouldn't have a chance to do at home. Not only did they learn about circuit theory, we did a lot of measuring of copper tape!
The kit was well-stocked with everything needed to facilitate the unit. The guide was great and the kids loved every challenge. I loved the fact the booklet is geared towards the local area (e.g. Cambridge Clock Tower).

The Power It Up kit was amazing. The students really enjoyed learning about and creating their own circuits. There was more than enough equipment, and it was easy to understand as a teacher. There was also scope for the students to create and experiment with their own circuits, which they loved.
