4.6 Rating 16 Reviews
One of the aims of Waipā Networks was to provide enough material for every student to have a hands-on learning experience. Do you feel this was achieved? Yes
How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? They had to think carefully and remember how to lay the copper tape in order to get the circuit working.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? The circuit is open/closed now
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? Helped them put what we had learnt about batteries, switches, conductors and output devices into 'hands on' practice.
Did this resource help you meet your learning objectives and support student engagement?

Learning how circuits work and how energy flows through a circuit is a good way to help young people understand that electricity can be dangerous Agree
Did you students enjoy seeing stories that related to landmarks in their local Waipā area? Yes
We loved using the Waipā Power It Up kit in our classroom. The kids enjoyed building the cirucits as well as completing the other activities that were in the books.

How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? Because the children were able to use the equipment but be creative in their ideas it helped the link the concepts of STEM together.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? I understand how the pieces all go together, and how important each piece is to make it all work
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? By having the necessary equipment all avaliable the children were able to see how the circuit worked, and the questions provided a good starting place

The Waipa Power it up unit and equipment was a great way to get an understanding of how things work for the students. It took a bit of planning to get the understanding correct for the group. Once they were able to put the right pieces together it all made sense.

How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? they had to lots of bug finding - if their circuit did not work - what was the problem, and then finding a way to fix it maintaining conductivity.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? You have to keep the circuit connected.
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? they got a very good understanding of all of these components.

This was an incredible kit. It gave the opportunity for our students to really understand the way a series and parallel circuit works. We had some exciting new tools to teach this knowledge in a hands on way. We appreciated the amount of equipment that was provided and used this to deepen the knowledge of the children about electricity. Thanks Waiapa Power!

How did the activities encourage students to think creatively while applying STEM concepts? Aware of the length of the copper wire and how to make the folds using mathematical skills. Scientific explanations about how the components all work making links to prior and new knowledge.
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom when students were building their circuits that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? I can help to fix that, I had a break in my circuit that stopped it being complete.
How did this resource help students recognise and explain the function of circuit components (e.g., battery, switch, conductor, output device)? The students were able to name and recognise the key components. They were able to explain the different uses and how they would be used in every day life.
