One of the aims of Waipā Networks was to provide enough material for every student to have a hands-on learning experience. Do you feel this was achieved? Yes
What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? "Can we please do this everyday!"
How did this kit allow the exploration of energy transformation for your learners? Through discussion and guided questioning, the students were able to describe the energy involved and explain how the energy from the sun was transferred and transformed during the activity, reinforcing their understanding of solar energy.

This kit was one of the highlights of our year! The students loved working in pairs to build their cars. It was exciting to see those students who thrive on the practical, hands-on learning, really thrive as they were able to take the lead and support their peers. Racing the solar cars and timing the races, allowed for a little fun competition in class (and awesome learning of course!). The modifications students made to their solar cars sparked some super problem solving. All round a superb kit!

This was an awesome activity for my Y10s. They had to work in pairs, carefully read the instructions and then problem solve if it didn't work. That was even before they started modifying! We loved it

What’s a sentence you heard in your classroom that would help us understand the type of learning that was taking place? Wow, it started making the motor go as soon as the sun was the panel!
How did this kit allow the exploration of energy transformation for your learners? They were a little lost watching the suggested videos. However, I related the movement of electrons to rubbing a balloon and picking up tissue paper. Then explained the sun did a similar job to the rubbing.

I used these kits with two classes, Year 4 and Year 5. The students thoroughly enjoyed making both the Balloon cars and the Solar cars. They were totally surprised at how quickly the solar enegry powered the cars. Two suggestions that I have would be: - Supply larger balloons for the balloon cars, as the students struggled to blow them up, and they did not have the capacity to propel the cars. - Make a note on the Solar car instructions that the gear that is attached to the rear drive shaft needs to be installed on the right-hand side (otherwise the car drives backwards)

Our science investigation was around forces and energy sources so it was another way to demonstrate a type of energy. As it was a yr 3 -8 class this was quite challenging as fine motor control was tricky for younger students. They were really engaged and showed a good undrstanding of how their cars worked.

The cars were awesome, and building them was fun. A 'teacher checklist' would have been handy - I don't normally carry a lighter to shink wrap plastic! Racing them was also awesome - very handy that you had included a stopwatch, and measuring tape. I would have loved either one per child, or one between two - getting 20 for a class of 29 students was tricky.

Such a cool kit! The students liked that it was hands on and doing the wiring. It was fun but complicated. Instructions were clear. Some students needed support. Some screws and putting the wheels on was the hardest bit. Our cars went pretty far. A good challenge in our classroom! We definitely needed to use our team work.
