I got this backpack to replace two others: a day-to-day 18L bag that was too small for longer trips and a 35L travel bag that was too large for daily use. Day to day, the Shell is heavier than the 18L bag because it is made of thicker material, closer to the 35L bag; I can feel that extra kilogram. Nonetheless, there are some modifications I plan on making to improve it, most of which add even more weight; I would like to see the backpack include these changes someday (designers: we can talk! in Spanish!): 1. Adding thin zippers to the side pockets. When I'm not carrying two bottles, this would add two sorely-needed external pockets! 2. Adding removable straps just above the side pockets, to keep bottles and large objects in place. The pockets have very wide openings that exert little pressure when the bag is not filled to capacity, so unless you carry massive bottles, they slide around. Plus, if you have to run and jump a little, they will fly, even with the zippers I mentioned. Two additional stretchy bands will do the trick; I plan on making them removable with hooks and adding four loops to the _inside_ of one of the bag's side to I can also hold bottles vertically when I choose to put them inside. 3. Adding a pull cord to the "hidden" front pocket; the top front-pocket, when filled with more than 50g, sags and pulls the whole front down if you open the laptop zipper and causes it to strain a lot when zipping it closed -- I'm not sure how long that will hold; making the lower pocket easier to open and close allows me to put heavier items that I want within easy reach there and leave the top pocket for light things 4. Adding a very thin, zippable, velcro-able "lid" to the top of the bag. In its current form, the bag is kept "closed" even when full by a flap and two straps with clips; they don't extend fully, so the closed bag is rounded, keeping water out but also cutting massively into the volume you can carry. I plan to add a second "lid" that allows the bag to extend to a full cuboid, zipping along the edge of the existing lips and holding the original flap flat with velcro (or maybe two more clips, positioned strategically) and that, when not in use, can be folded like a scroll and kept in place by a second piece of velcro. 5. If I used the top opening more, replacing the clips with Fidlock Sliders. For 14 EUR, this would save so much time opening and closing it! 6. Adding a few more Fidlock magnets or bits of webbing in PALS-compatible arrangements to the sides. One thing that attracted me to the bag was that it is modular, so you can attach even more stuff to it if you need to. I don't take advantage of it at this point. There are no attachments compatible with the Fidlock setup in the back except the ones Tropicfeel offers. A lot of attachments, however, are compatible with PALS/MOLLE, including very light-weight holders for small items like flashlights, very compact bottle holders, pockets, etc. I could even make a converter plate with magnet holders on one side and webbing on the other, if I wanted to create a very large bag. 7. Adding small strips / dots of reflective tape to the back and sides. The only reflective material is in the pulls for the zippers, and if you live away from the equator that means you are invisible a lot of the year after 4pm. Not cool. 8. Removing the flap to secure the laptop. It's pointless, bulky and adds weight. 9. Adding a thin, plastic divider to the laptop pocket so a thin laptop and papers can co-exist without one crushing the other. 10. Replacing the sliding, elastic strap holders with fixed, elastic ones like in the Wayks bag, because the sliding ones keep sliding and don't serve their purpose. I wish the hip attachment went through the whole back and was removable, to reduce weight when not traveling. I also wish the top handle was wide, padded, and more centered (which it can't because of the design of the top flap), because I often take it off in crowded areas and holding it from the top hurts. In all, it's a good attempt at a multi-purpose bag, and anything comparable that I could start modifying to make it perfect for my needs -- because I've found no perfect design -- costs at least as much, often a lot more and weighs the same. My modifications will cost me about 25 EUR in materials and a lot more in manual labor. The bag feels solid, and if you are not as picky as I am, it's actually well thought out in relation to alternatives.

I've had this backpack for little over a year now and I wouldn't want to miss it! Used it for numerous week trips, perfect with the foldable insert. I also use it in my daily life. Going to work and grocery shopping afterwards has never been easier ;)
