This little cottage is perfect for a couples getaway. It’s on a great stretch of beach just the right distance from town. However, it is worn out. It’s in desperate need of an update. The floors are badly scarred up, the bathroom (master) is mildewed around the tub, and the furniture is worn out. The pots and pans were badly scratched Teflon and probably not safe to use. It would take so little to make this place a gem!! We’ve rented a lot of beach homes through the years and have seen really great ones and really bad ones. In spite of its potential, Betsy’s falls solidly in the middle. P. S. Your dryer works fine but the lint gathers in the vent on the side of the house. We cleaned out a softball sized bundle of lint. Probably a fire hazard.

Improvement is the key word here. My summary of problems: Stair railing - careful, by the time you get all your things upstairs, your hands are full of splinters. Can't you at least sand the railing. Porch: Only one option here - a table with chair cushions I would not sit on because they looked and smelled filthy. We went to Walmart and bought cushions to use as this was the only furniture tenants had to use. No other chairs or any kind of lounging furniture. Hard to enjoy that surf sound and sight so we barely use the porch. Frontroom furniture: Two very uncomfortable couches on two facing walls with a rattan type coffeetable in between but unreachable from both couches. You have to crane your neck to watch TV because neither couch faces it. Really poor planning and you are told NOT to move any furniture. Roaches: Huge ones! Crawl across the floors, scoot up into the couches, all rooms. Bug lady came, roaches still scooting when we left. We had to bag and securely close all food items because we could not stand the thought of roaches crawling on our eats. Refrigerator: Alternately RATTLES, doesn't cool or freezes your food in frig. section. Paint: Whole house inside and outside has been painted, with scratch marks, chips and use marks on cupboard fronts, counters etc. probably because of wrong type of paint used. In other words the house feels cheaply done and run down and certainly not worth the daily price tag being asked. Lights are far and few between with a lot of blown or missing bulbs which we reported but received no response. Bathrooms: the bathroom between two bedrooms is TINY. The space between the commode and small sink is 3" and if you are a larger person you will hit all walls as you turn around. BE very careful in master bath as tub bottom is slippery and falling is only waiting to happen. Betsy's Beachfront Cottage is overpriced in our opinion and shows little attempt by owner to offer even the smallest of "luxury" to the people paying to stay there.

So, our stay was a mixed bag. What went well: - Location is great. Loved the beach being right outside the back door. - Beds were comfortable. - Kitchen was well-stocked and had what we needed to prepare meals. - Plenty of seating on the deck which was nice for enjoying the view. I spent a lot of time on the deck reading and relaxing. That was wonderful! What needs improvement: - The house has roaches. We took my in-laws on this trip as part of their Christmas gift. I have photos of the roach activity near the bed where my father-in-law slept. Huge, very alive tree roaches on the walls and floor, roach droppings and body parts on the bed spread, dead roaches on the floor. It was awful. Another example - I opened the silverware drawer in the kitchen while cooking and a huge roach was walking around in the drawer. - The house was just not clean. The fridge smelled like fish when we arrived, there was leftover food on some of the dishes, and there was grease on the walls in the kitchen. We had to wash the dishes before we used them. - There was a feeling of carelessness. There was a dirty rag left out on the deck bench and a used face mask by the back door on the deck. (With Covid happening, that's not something you want to see.) There was a lot of random garbage (plastic bottles, etc.) and debris on the ground in the area by the picnic table. I'm guessing it was the result of the recent hurricane but it would've taken about 10 minutes to clean up. We were there for less than four full days (arrived on a Sunday at 3pm for check-in, and left Thursday by 10am). We paid over $2000 for the house. For $500+ per day, I expect basic cleanliness and for the house to be treated for roaches. I was honestly uncomfortable the whole time I was there and didn't sleep well because of the roaches. I live in Texas and we pay for regular pest control treatment because we know they are here and can be a problem if left untreated. It's not that expensive to do and we don't have them in our home as a result. When I rent a house for this price, it's reasonable to expect that it won't have bugs. So overall - the location was great and the house/deck itself was nice for a small family to enjoy the beach, but for us to come back, there would need to be some effort made around cleanliness/bugs.

On check-in, floor sandy, seemed like entire house had not been well cleaned. Ice maker did not work, toaster oven did not work. Vent hood did not work and no light bulbs over stove. Requested toaster oven and lite bulbs. Toaster was delivered but bulbs never were. So, had to move bulbs from other fixtures. Front and rear doors very flimsy; could be easily broken into. We rent houses at the beach in Galveston 3 to 6 times per year. We will not be renting this house again.
