How to test an alternator. Set your multi-meter to VAC (V~) Remove the end cover and AVR/capacitor from the alternator and unhook all wires (take note of wires if not connector block) Run generator and test brushes (if AVR unit. + is on left) and each leg of the windings. On some brushless Capacitor alternators these are the wires to the capacitor. If readings are 0 – 0.05 Vac on brushes (AVR units only) then replace brushes. If readings are under 3 Vac on the alternator windings or brushless alternators with a capacitor, then flash the alternator while generator is running with AVR/Capacitor fitted. Plug in a power drill to the generator sockets and while holding the “on button” turn the drill head anticlockwise 3 times. See if drill will run. If does try larger wattage items. If results are between 3-7 Vac, but you are not getting full voltage at the sockets, then you will need to replace your AVR/Capacitor. If results are above 8-12 Vac range, then you will need to replace your AVR/Capacitor. But be warned that the high reading will damage the AVR/Capacitor over time. This could result in it lasting a fraction of the time expected on a stable alternator. If results are above 13 Vac range, be sure you removed the AVR/Capacitor before testing. If you have and are receiving this result, we suggest you take your generator to a “Motor Rewind” company for repair.
