“My mother was a former employee of our local girl scout council. She passed away 15 years ago. I recently received a letter stating I should call them about a retirement benefit. The person I spoke with on the phone was very friendly and provided all the information she was allowed to. She let me know there was an unpaid survivor benefit that they want to send me, but I would need to provide the death certificates for both my mother and father first. I asked her to let me know the amount of the benefit as it's not worth me paying for two death certs if the benefit is $50. She informed me that they cannot calculate the benefit until the death certs are provided. As a logically thinking person, I have no idea why they choose not to calculate the amount and tell someone. This seems to be a very unfriendly customer service policy.”
