While the tutors were absolutely fantastic: very knowledgable, approachable and great at initiating the break out groups etc, I found that some of the course materials and the formast of the exam were lacking. The slide deck contained references to a standard that we were not covering in our course (was clearly a typo/accidental inclusion), and additionally, there was a relaince on the candidates having access to and knowledge of a further two standards that was not mentioned in any of the course details when booking. This led to quite a lot of anxiety regarding the exam as I'd have no chance to read through the two additional standards to either familiarise myself with their content or to ensure I understood how they complement the standard we were focusing on. More generally I felt that the whole course was assuming that not only that the candidates would be working as external auditors, but that they would be employed by a certifying body - which amplified the issue of the additional standards not being provided or referenced as they were specifically relevant to external/certifying body auditing. As an experienced internal auditor working with multiple standards in the education sector, I found this quite jarring but again, had this been made clear prior to the course being undertaken, additional research could have been conducted to prepare me for the change in perspective. Additionally, I felt that there were some shortcomings with the format of the practice exam and real exam. The test exam did not draw from a bank of generic questions which meant that you were given the same 40 practice questions each time you practices and this increased the chances of memorising the answers and creating a false sense of preparedness for the real test. Both the practice and real assessment included questions on the additional standards that I felt were impossible to answer without access to and understanding of those standard as some of the responses required you to know the definition of specific terms or responsibilities which were not covered in the course slides. I also felt that the format of the test was somewhat clunky. As an online, remote proctored test I was expecting there to be screen recording, however, as an open book exam which did not allow you to go back to previous questions and with a short time allowance, I felt that it was a bit disproportionate. Being able to answer questions you are confident in your response and allowing candidates to go back to more challenging questions would not compromise security/the integrity of the assessment as it is open book and screen recording/monitoring is in place meaning that candidates would not be able to confer with one another/online - and if they attempted it, it would be easy to identify. If there was no option to allow navigation across questions, then it would have been helpful to have a bit more time as it worked out to be approximately 2.5 mins per question but some questions required candidates to read a significant portion of text which may introduce barriers to candidates with certain conditions, or those who read at a moderate to slower pace, or even those who are nervous and would need to read the text more than once to ensure they fully understand the queston - especially given as they cannot go back to it later on. A final point on the exam format is that while each candidate will see a unique batch of questions pulled from a large item bank, your results are not released until each person has completed the exam, or that the deadline for completing the exam has passed. This means you may be waiting for approximately 6 weeks post course end date if someone in your group decides not to take the exam until the final day. Considering the use of an item bank, online proctoring and that the exam is open book anyway - it seems a bit extreme to consider that canddiates would be able to assist one another to complete the exam as they would each see different questions, and would not be able to provide help within the short time provided to respond to the questions. The tutors we had were really engaging and clearly very experienced with the main standard - they were able to steer the group to the key points where we drifted, and ensured that everyone contributed to the sessions which is no small feat! Time management was spot on - we didn't miss anything and were able to start and fininsh on time which is incredibly helpful when you have other considerations outside of normal working hours. At no point did we feel rushed or that we couldn't ask questions which again is very reassuring when you are embarking on a certificated programme.
