I hadn't realised that the light oak rustic floating shelf I had ordered was a piece of stained fairly rough pine. Maybe I should have looked closer before ordering. The shelf was relatively easy to fit but one of the holes wasn't deep enough to accept the length of pin so there is a wider gap between the wall and shelf at one end. The supplier gave me a 50% refund for the problems.
