I was recently given an ancient banjolele in poor condition with badly fitted replacement friction tuners. To make the instrument playable again, I decided to fit geared mini tuners as part of the refurb. I plugged the old tuner holes and drilled new holes slightly offset from original centres. The cast metal tuner bodies successfully hid all my woodwork and although significantly heavier than friction tuners, they don't make the instrument feel unbalanced in use. The mini tuners also look just the right size for the instrument. Overall excellent. Can't stop grinning when I play.
