We live in Boulder Co and smoking in the winter eats more pellets than I eat candy bars. Christmas dinner of Turduckin, Tenderloin, and Prime rib was going thru pellets at an amazing rate. I tried old beach towels and blankets as insulation which helped but slowly roasted them. Monday morning I ordered the Thermal Jacket. It was the second best investment I made, the first was my Yoder YS-640. It cut the pellet burn in half. I put it on and have never taken it off. I would advise everyone that this is a must have item.

Update. Another use for the Jacket. I have my controller programmed to increase the pit temp as the meat temp rises through the smoking stage. Then once at 170 ish wrap in paper and finish the cook. Which is really baking to temp. at 225 a Brisket or a Butt can take some time. Time is pellets. Pellets are cash. Fourth of July weekend was Brisket time. Smoke, wrap and back in the pit, but this time I reinstalled the door and back sections of the jacket. Temp was true and steady and pellet consumption was reduced again.

Winter Smokes are back. First comment is in regard to Quality. This jacket is very well made. Second, It works. Third, Nuff said. Unless you would like to read the rest of the story. Unlike a big box store purchase there are options. As I hadn't done a lot of cooks here in the New England Winter, I did not add the Jacket when I ordered my YS640. Why didn't I do a lot of winter cooks is the real question. Because it's Winter, Cold, wind, snow etc. Having to spend even more time fretting about the cook temp. Charcoal, propane, electric didn't matter. Hmm isn't that why I went with the Pellet fed pit with the programmable electronic controller? Yes.. and now that I have it and learned (learning) how to use it, I do a lotttt more cooks. A late December, 12+ hour cook had rain, wind, cold, snow all at once. The YS640 maintained temperature. It happily fed pellets at a rate that had me fretting about the hopper level and slightly concerned that I had enough pellets. To the web page and ordered the jacket. Day of arrival it was easily installed. Following day the Brisket and Chuck Ribs were in. Started in the 20's up to 30 down to the teens a moderate breeze for most of the day. About 17 hours of low and slow later were at 205 and pellet consumption was back to a Summer time rate. The Only concern I had was the wind being able to get under the edges of the jacket. I used a few of my shop magnets along the edges to hold it down. Now Its back to as close as It can be to, set it and for get it. If only there was a basting option that you didn't have to open the door.
