having read the reviews, my husband and I were really looking forward to the hike. We are in our early 70's and are avid hikers, but we were unable to complete this hike. There must be a clearly statement about the problem of this hike for a few people. The rest of our group seemed to be in their 20's and 30's, and that they loved the experience. Kyle was very accommodating and stayed with us while the others completed the hike

Let's start with the positive aspect: the volcano, the colours, the view, are incredible, truly beautiful (although if you have done the Tongariro Alpine crossing before like we did, this won't be too different. But still beautiful.) The place itself isn't enough to command such a high price though. There is a lot of driving there and back. Alright it's a remote place, but what about explaining the history of the place, starting in the bus, talking about the geological features, the historical, traditional maori stories, and even for the greater region. There is so much to say, and we got so little info, and most of our questions couldn't find an answer. Disappointing. On the other hand, there was way too much time spent on safety instructions. What about saying clearly on the website that it is steep and rough terrain (it is a volcano after all!) and not accept people with improper gear or simply not fit enough? Even when picking them up or just before the walk? There was way too much unnecessary safety instructions. It just managed to scare people and make them go even slower. Listening to our guide, I thought that many mountain walks should be simply closed in NZ if this short walk is so dangerous. So to make it clear, in one sentence: amazing place, but bad organisation, not enough knowledge of the place, too much security on the spot, overpriced for what you get in the end: 164$ (or 139$ with the backpacker deal) for 2h on a mountain... absurd.

The Mt Tarawera Volcanic Crater Experience was a fantastic trip. It offers the chance to explore an incredible landscape with amazing views. It was also really interesting learning about the history of the volcano and surrounding area.

The view from the top of the mountain was amazing. This was an experience like no other as you "float" through volcanic rocks sometimes nearly up to your knees. Take good footwear. It was a great adventure for the family. I highly recommend taking the time to visit Mt Tarawera!

This was the highlight of our trip to Rotorua. The scenery from the top was amazing, the experience of climbing the mountain then going down into the crater was incredible and the guides were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Highly recommended.
