This is a fun activity in Hackney, London

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking Japanese Shina wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade printing paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of these enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session!

Printing Class Structure
Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words from me on my printmaking career and a round-the-table 'meet and greet' from everyone to begin the workshop.

Stage one - We will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage two - Delve a little deeper, showing you how to use multiple blocks and reduction-cutting techniques to create more complex multi-colour prints.

Stage three - This a perfect opportunity to make multiple prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage four - I'll be collecting everyone's individual prints and rolling them up into tubes for safe passage home.

I'll hand out a materials list from my favourite suppliers I use for the studio - a great resource to encourage more printing in the future!

My studio is on floor 6 at Regent Studios: if you’re not taking the stairs please take the right hand lift and depart on floor 6 for studio 64B. For all evening workshops there will be plenty of snacks available, especially for those who've come straight from work. The day sessions include a light plant-based lunch: homemade soup with sourdough. Please do let me know if you have any dietary requirements or allergies.

Thanks, Alex

We had a wonderful time at the woodcut printing workshop! Alex was not only an excellent teacher but also a genuine and lovely person. His passion for the craft made the whole experience very engaging and inspiring :) He introduced us to the basics of his craft, shared different techniques, and guided us through the process with patience and encouragement. The studio itself had such a calm and peaceful atmosphere, where we could easily focus, be creative, and completely lose ourselves in the process (in the best way!). We would highly recommend this workshop to anyone - whether you’re interested in detailed, hands-on art work or simply looking for a fun creative activity to enjoy with friends or family. We had a fantastic time and are hoping to do more woodcut printing in the future!

I was the only attendee for this slot which was lucky for me as I had Alex all to myself. I went to learn about linocut, but Alex introduced me to woodcut– a rabbit hole I was delighted to fall down and would not have tried without his help. As I had done some basic linocut, I was able to use the lesson to explore with Alex refining my self-taught technique which I really appreciated. The time flew by and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Alex is an experienced printmaker and enjoys teaching. He is very patient! His studio is an inspirational space with lots of art on the walls, books, images, and equipment to experiment with. I would be happy to recommend a lesson with Alex.

Three of us joined Alex and around 5 othes for an afternoon, and we all loved it. He explaines everything clearly, including a bit of the history and context of wood cut printing. Everything is provided, you need and Alex helps you to realise your aims, while allowing you the space to explore your own creativity. This was a complete escape from the stresses of life, and we found ourselves fully engaged and focused for three hours. I would love to come back and do this for longer! The workshop space is beautiful and inspiring too.
