This is a fun activity in Hackney, London

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking Japanese wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade printing paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of these enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session!

Printing Class Structure
Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words from me on my printmaking career and a round-the-table 'meet and greet' from everyone to begin the workshop.

Stage one - We will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage two - Delve a little deeper, showing you how to use multiple blocks and reduction-cutting techniques to create more complex multi-colour prints.

Stage three - This a perfect opportunity to make multiple prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage four - I'll be collecting everyone's individual prints and rolling them up into tubes for safe passage home.

I'll hand out a materials list from my favourite suppliers I use for the studio - a great resource to encourage more printing in the future!

My studio is on floor 6 at Regent Studios: if you’re not taking the stairs please take the right hand lift and depart on floor 6 for studio 64B. For all evening workshops there will be plenty of snacks available, especially for those who've come straight from work. The day sessions include a light plant-based lunch - in autumn and winter there will be homemade soup. Please do let me know if you have any dietary requirements or allergies.

Thanks, Alex

We spent a wonderful afternoon learning woodcut printing with Alex! The studio is beautiful and Alex is a lovely and calm teacher, taking his time to go through different techniques, tools, paper and showing us some beautiful work. We left feeling inspired and wanting to come back for more! Looking forward for some of Alex's exhibitions as well, good luck!!

Bought this session as a gift for my partner who has previously done some lino printing and had been interested in learning more about wood block printing. He really enjoyed the session and experimented with making his own reduction cut print. I had never done any kind of printing before and expected to find it quite difficult but it was actually a much easier process than I had expected and I would definitely like to do it again! Alex was a good teacher and interesting to talk to, the session was relaxed, we worked at our own pace and we both came away having learned a lot. We now have a list of materials to have a go with ourselves too. It was an enjoyable and memorable afternoon! Thanks Alex

Wonderful. I keep coming back! Alex is a fantastic teacher. The studio is beautiful and there’s so much opportunity to do your own thing and/or receive instruction and support, whatever you choose. Thanks for a brilliant day. (Plus the homemade lunch is a wonderful bonus!)

Great workshop. Alex was very helpful in explaining how to use the tools and paper. I met a lovely couple and the atmosphere was great. We had some interesting chats and a hot soup made by Alex. I loved every moment of it and will be booking another workshop.

My partner and I had such a great time. Alex is an excellent teacher, it was so nice to discover the woodcut printing techniques while being in his artist studio. We left with beautiful prints to hang on our walls. Highly recommended.

I had a great time at the class! Ended up being just me there and Alex was kind enough to go ahead with it. He is super knowledgeable and I learnt a lot about different techniques and possibilities of the form, I'm going to try and keep it up!
