This is a fun activity in Hackney, London

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking Japanese wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade printing paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of these enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session!

Printing Class Structure
Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words from me on my printmaking career and a round-the-table 'meet and greet' from everyone to begin the workshop.

Stage one - We will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage two - Delve a little deeper, showing you how to use multiple blocks and reduction-cutting techniques to create more complex multi-colour prints.

Stage three - This a perfect opportunity to make multiple prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage four - I'll be collecting everyone's individual prints and rolling them up into tubes for safe passage home.

I'll hand out a materials list from my favourite suppliers I use for the studio - a great resource to encourage more printing in the future!

My studio is on floor 6 at Regent Studios: if you’re not taking the stairs please take the right hand lift and depart on floor 6 for studio 64B. For all evening workshops there will be plenty of snacks available, especially for those who've come straight from work. The day sessions include a light plant-based lunch - in autumn and winter there will be homemade soup. Please do let me know if you have any dietary requirements or allergies.

Thanks, Alex

Thoroughly enjoyable and insightful class with plenty of inspiration at hand. Thank you very much Alex for sharing your knowledge with us. We walked away with a lovely print each and with a proud "we did that" feeling

Had a very enjoyable time at this workshop, we learnt more about woodblock printing and had a chance to practice with the tools before creating our own blocks to print, I think we all felt inspired and had great fun experimenting with colours and techniques. Alex was an excellent teacher and passed on his enthusiasm for the craft. His workshop is beautiful with great views and a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

The experience was worth it alone for the beautiful studio, but on top of that Alex is a charming and talented teacher. The structure of the class worked well, having a chance to practice and learn some skills before trying something ambitious, and Alex have us lots of ideas and inspiration to work from.

We really enjoyed this class. Alex is a serious artist with an impressive array of work. He gave us a very warm welcome and patiently took us through how woodcutting works, how to use the tools, and what techniques can be used to create different effects. After some practice we each created out own masterpiece. Again Alex was very patient and helpful, and we were all delighted by what we were able to produce. The studio itself is a lovely space with great light too. Highly recommended.

Alex was so welcoming, patient and a font of knowledge about all things Japanese woodcut. He shared both the basics and more extended knowledge for progressing artworks beyond the workshop. He discussed the tools, inks and papers as well as suppliers. Sooo helpful. Big thanks, I have already recommended his workshops.

Amazing class! Alex is a wonderful teacher, and brings so much knowledge and love of his work to his classes. The day was such a brilliant experience, and has inspired me to take up woodcut printing as a hobby. He strikes a great balance of being instructive, but also giving you freedom to be creative and explore your own ideas. He has a beautiful studio, which was cosy and warm on a wintery day, and he made us so many cups of tea, coffee, and gorgeous homemade soup to keep us going through the day. I can't wait to go again!
