“These spikes tend to get brittle and fail after a few years, and if installed in homes with plastic siding, it is very difficult to get the old broken ones out. Every few years I find that 1 or 2 or 3 on each shutter has failed. The spikes tend to break off flush with the plastic siding behind the shutters, and thus impossible to grab with a pair of pliers or other tool. On some of them, I've been able to drive the broken section into the hollow inner wall with a punch, but most of the time they will simply bend over. Then when you try to drill them out, oftentimes the drill will not stay centered in the soft material of the spikes and wanders off, enlarging the original hole in the plastic siding and or the underlayment. I recently replaced about a dozen of broken spikes, and over half had to be drilled out....so I had to use some sealant around each enlarged hole in the plastic siding, making it what I considered to be a kludgey fix.”
“Installed Shutters in 2019 to Brick house. Many compliments on the look. 2023 Order replacement part on Shutter fasteners and was very quick to deliver.”
