The awning overall is wonderful. We were painting the 14 existing awnings and this replacement. In the end, you could not tell them apart. The instructions were a problem in two ways. First, do not begin to try the steps for hanging the frame and then putting on the panels. We had to take it back down because there was no way in the world to access where a ome of the screws belonged once it was hanging. Lastly, we received instructions that must have been photocopied two thousand times since they were first written and the pictures are so blacked out from being photocopies being photocopied. Even the text was a struggle. Print fresh pages in grey scale. It’s understandable that you may not want to provide color copies but the legibility was a major issue during assembly.

Had I known what I was getting into, prior to my purchase, I would not have ordered this awning. Unaware of the difficulty I faced in the assembly and installation I had to seek help. Professionals were unwilling to take this on because it wasn’t something I had purchased from them. Neighbors took one look at all the pieces and just walked away. The awning sat in unassembled parts on my porch for weeks until I found a person, inexperienced like me, who was willing to give it a try. I did call General Awnings to ask if there was a video available showing the basics of installation but was simply told, “no”. I found this to be very disappointing. The printed instructions were not as clear as they could have been and the photos were certainly poor, at best. The step-by-step instructions left out much of what might have been suggested as tips, leaving a great deal of the process to trial and error. I can’t place all of my displeasure with General Awnings because I wasn’t forced to order this item. My only previous experience installing an awning, obviously from another source, was one that completely assembled on the ground and was simply lifted into place onto some preinstalled brackets and secured with hand-tightened butterfly screws. This (old) awning has been in place on the original house for 60 years. I was anticipating a similar experience but was I ever wrong. I believe this awning was way too expensive for a product that should have had better included instructions , a video showing the installation process or at least better photos of the process even if that meant accessing additional instructions online. I can’t attest to the quality and build of this General Awning since it hasn’t yet experienced any severe weather. Yet to come will be heavy snowfalls, nor’easters, and the typical northwest winds of March. And no, I will not be ordering another one.

Awning is very effective. Assembly instructions were at times confusing, and definitely require more than one set of hands to install.

The awning was delivered in perfect condition. Directions were clear cut and easy to follow. Hanging the awning is defininitely a two person operation. I found that if you attached the awning to the building on each side with a screw through the side flange (towards the top), it held the awning in place and made attaching it to the crosspiece on the building that much easier. I live in Central NY and so far the awning has held up to ice, snow and wind with no problem!
