The training module provided quite a helpful overview of the subject matter. However, there are three points I think it might be worth the course writers considering - not least if your course materials are updated in the light of feedback. 1. The module went beyond the requirements of the 2010 Equalities Act at various points. At some points it seemed to be disagreeing with or questioning the Act. As someone with direct reports, I needed this module to explain clearly the requirements of the Act so I could ensure legal requirements are followed. The confusion of the viewpoints of the course writers with the requirements of the Act detracted from my learning the legal requirements within which I am to operate. 2. The course dealt with a number of topics which are sensitive and some of which are publicly disputed. Programmed learning is not the ideal educational medium for genuine learning around sensitive and disputed topics. I suspect that the medium of programmed learning will mean that many (who are not convinced by the viewpoints of the course writers) will complete this as a tick box exercise - which is regrettable as these topics are important. Perhaps a future version of the course might stick to programmed learning for the requirements of the Act coupled with an online or in-person forum to discuss the topics properly so that there is space for deep learning to happen. 3. The medium of programmed learning requires fulfilment of certain tasks to progress in the course. Therefore, there was one point where I had to tick a box which I did not beleive in order to complete the course. This was where I had to tick the box stating that promoting Pride Weeks at work was good practice - where the teachings of my religion (and those of at least three other religions you mentioned in the course, practiced in the traditional way) would forbid me and others from supporting such events. Therefore, ironically, the course required me to go against a protected characteristic (my religion) in order to succesfully complete. This is very concerning as the 2010 Act does not appear to require me to support Pride Events at work. On point 3, the course writers might want to revisit questions where the correct answer reflects their viewpoints rather than the requirements of the 2010 Act. An influential definition of indoctrination describes indoctrination as processes of teaching and learning which promote foregone conclusions, and do not give space for people to question these conclusions or introduce people to the questions which might help them critique these conclusions. Where the course writers moved beyond the clarification of the requirements of the Act into the promotion of their viewpoints, they crossed this line and the module could reasonably be described as indoctrinatory. This is quite serious. I realise that point 3 may feel quite a stark statement for those responsible for the course but it is meant kindly and constructively. I hope my points help to feed into a more effective version in due course.
