For people who want to command small fleets of capital ships in space combat, this is the game you want. The rules of play are easy to learn, and you can pick it up fairly quick. It's two biggest drawbacks are: 1) Fighters- the mechanic for fighters isn't as well developed or in depth as the rest of the game, but it still adds to the game. Fighters also come unpainted. 2) Playing with just the forces available from the Starter Set, the Rebels have a hard time standing toe to toe with the Imperial forces. The Nebula and Corvette have some advantages over the Victory, but they lack the staying power to stand up to the Destroyer, so it is best to have newer players try the Imperials first.

I'd have a harder time recommending the starter pack to new players unless they bought it from this website due to the outstanding price drops. Although I'd still recommend it or trying to get into one faction at least and selling the other ships from the starter kit to a friend and keeping all the core stuff the box comes with. That being said, I'm a huge attack wing fan for star trek, but found x-wing to be pretty bland and overpriced by comparison. SW:A is more expensive than attack wing, but the game is far less of a mess with how shields are tracked, they made upgrade cards nice and small, you only need one tool for movement. Once you get the hang of how the game plays it's quite fun. It has been a challenge getting people into the game though, in spite of that since it's new and the price is daunting to star trek attack wing players who also like having more than 2 factions. I'm having trouble getting my local game shops interested in it as well, I hope the popularity of the game picks up soon. If you're worried about a wasted investment, hold off unless you know for sure you can get enough people to play with so you wont just be sitting on a starter kit with no one to play with, like me. XD Otherwise, you might have to take the plunge and show people first hand the game is worth the price and still less pricey than x-wing yet vastly superior in terms of game play.

If your a fan of X-wing give this a go it's such a good game and in some ways better than X-wing.

Armada is a great companion game to X-wing. They both have a delicious star wars flavor while being distinctly their own. Whereas X-wing is reactionary and very fast paced, Armada is more thought out and strategic. Instead of trying to predict what your enemy is doing right now so you can stay on his tail, in Armada you're setting up moves 2 or even 3 turns ahead, predicting what action you'll need then, making sure you'll be in range at the right time, and that your hull zones with shields remaining will be able to tank shots. Everything from the interaction of squadrons to the big ships themselves is spot on and gives an easy to learn game a lot of great depth. My only regret is that it's hard to find those tiny card sleeves for the upgrades since only FF seems to make them! :D

Overall great game, but needs home one and star destroyers. A little pricey, but not bad with the discount.

Game mechanics are pretty straightforward and make a lot of sense for a game of Capitol Ship Combat.

Fantasy Flight delivers a strategic, capital ship game built on the foundational mechanics of its legendary X-Wing Miniatures game. *Game Play* X-Wing veterans will likely recognize a lot of basic similarities between X-Wing and Armada. Fleet construction/list building, combat, and abilities share commonalities between the two - although Armada diverges (and even improves) on some of these elements (no more defense dice!). The addition of objectives and a time limit for standard games also requires additional strategic planning to pull out a victory. All in all, FFG delivers another well-balanced game between factions (the base game is somewhat asymmetrical in strategy). *Quality* Capital ships are pre-painted and look stunning. While the squadrons are not, the variations in formations, etc, still look really neat on the table. If you have played other FFG Star Wars games, you will recognize a lot of the artwork (they do recycle quite a bit from other games), but the layout is intuitive and absolutely gorgeous. Cards are printed in linen finish, which is different than X-Wing, and may actually work a little better (some people swear by linen finish for one reason or another). *Price* While there are a lot of components in the box, the game still feels like it will get stale without the addition of expansions (and there will be plenty of those!). Don't get me wrong, there is plenty to play the game and vary it up (objectives help with that), but the Imperials are somewhat limited by a single capital ship. Why this is an issue: the MSRP and actual retail is fairly high (not by miniature standards). You can get Imperial Assault and get a campaign (with moderate replayability) and skirmish (high replayability) option straight out of the box. *Value* For miniature gamers and lovers of Star Wars, this is going to be a terrific value as the game expands to include more iconic (and endearing) ships. Price is likely to be a deterrent for many (X-Wing can be had for a lot less), but the value in game play is amazing. All-in-all, this is a tremendous game with a lot of potential!

The game play of Armada has been nicely adapted to provide that "Epic Space Battle" feel. Miniature Market is definitely the place to buy as I couldn't find anyone with this good a price. Similar to X-Wing, the contents of the core set give you a feel for the game, but you definitely need a few expansions or a friend with a core set to really experience the finer points of the games strategy. Although fun, Armada has a higher entry point cost than X-Wing, and sadly hasn't picked up as big of a fan base yet. I look forward excitedly to see the future of Armada as it is enjoyable.
