I wanted to like the F/A-18, I really did. But after frying 2 sets of retracts and being genuinely disappointed in the feel of it in the air it’s now collecting dust in the attic. Both times the retracts fried while fortunately on the ground, but shorted the electrical system such that I lost power. If it had been in the air it would have been a total loss. Not that I liked it much better in the air. I haven’t flown an indoor foamy that’s as floaty as this thing is. Sure the power system is great and will take it to nearly u limited vertical, but the thing would wander in rolls like nothing I’ve experienced. Even installing a gyro and moving the CG forward didn’t help the wandering tendencies. On a vertical up line I’d do a 180* roll and suddenly be 45* off vertical. I played with aileron differential, tailerons, everything and it just was never precise. Top speed was okay but not great. And the flaps were basically unneeded. With just half flap it lands at a walking pace. Good for a beginner but not really what I look for in a jet.

This is an truly awesome airplane. I had tried out unsuccessfully four earlier models with all of them eventually being lost due to elevator failure. I kept buying more of them.....and motion replaced one free of charge. They all looked so good in the air and seemed to fly so well that I was determined to succeed with this model. I recently heard they had made a new version, which I purchased two weeks ago. I since have many flights on this version and it is truly amazing. Flies really fast at 3/4 throttle and full power will give it unlimited vertical performance. I fly with an admiral 6000 mah battery. I recently gave it a spray coat of minwax and now it also has a gloss finish. I use a jeti radio with a gyro set at 30% gain which makes flying even in gusty weather very smooth. I've been in this hobby a long time, and this has turned out to be one of the best values I have come across in RTF models. Thank you Motion RCVery truly yoursMark Weinstein

Went together easily. Set up per manual. She flies great and looks better. Huge split S no problem. We got the stock system (cheated slightly in a dive) regardless got 138MPH. Very little wind. Comes in slow and steady.

I bought this Blue F-18 version cause I have every other Motion RC EDF jet and most are grey so wanted a change. On grey cloudy days it was easy to see but not on blue ski clear days. I painted it with Min Wax clear acrylic clear coat to make it shiny like the real ones . Shame on Freewing with the matte finish! I also did mods, check elevator mount, it was glued in well. And pulled elevator servos to assure no wires pinched. All ok. Flies well but low throws on ailerons is too much and any body but a good edf pilot might crash it on those settings . Elevator lows need actually more throw to pull the long nose around. Soooo,, on 6th flight at about 120 feet away from me and about 90 off ground it suddenly went down at 45 degree angle into asphalt runway . Edf , back gears and esc were all ok but rest was toast. Futaba 10 channel radio used has never had any problem ever and have used it many times since on other planes with no issues so that wasn't it. All systems that were checkable including , even though damaged , battery showed no issues and Motion had no answers for what happened . Sh,,,t happens was what I was basicly told and I wasn't asking for any refund anyway cause I knowSh,,,t does happen . I should make that title of review now. SH,,,T HAPPENS!!! LOL! Don't hesitate to buy it if you really like it and be ready for what happens then, hopefully nothing for you.

Having grown up watching the Blue Angels do air shows, I really needed one of these. Finally pulled the trigger. Ordered it on a Thursday night and it was on my door step on Saturday!Put it together the following Saturday. The plane went together very well. I double checked the two spots that they said regarding the elevator and the servos. Found no problem with either spot. Got it all together and set my throws etc. All good to go. Went to run up the motor and it was really weird. Dang!!Called motion on Monday and received instructions where to upload the video of what the motor was doing. On Tuesday I already had the mailing label and instructions of what to send. On Thursday morning I received notice that it was a bad fan unit and my new one was being shipped. It arrived on Friday and worked great. I was not happy about the motor, but Motion did an incredibly fast turn around to get me a new one. I was very impressed with how quickly it happened and how supportive their staff was in helping me out.I know have three flights on it and really think it flies great. I have no stabilization in it and it just flies like it is one rails!! Still getting used to its capabilities. Landing which I was nervous about were very uneventful. It looks so cool on a low high speed pass. Too much fun!!!!!

Great flying plane so far! Had 5 great flights on it! Had a close call on landing as one flap servo didn’t come down but was able to land without damage. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again.

Outstanding EDF Jet! But you'd better know what you're doing. This EDF flies much better with a heavy pack. I use the stock 6s setup with a 6000, or spektrum SMART 7000 pack. Flights with the lighter 5000 pack were a bit more twitchy and not as smooth when coming in to land especially if there's a bit of wind. The 6000 & 7000 6s packs allowed the plane to settle nicely and hold its glide path when coming in to land. Half flap landings are sweet! It enables a bit more control and slow high alpha on the flare. If using full flaps, I recommend only when you're straight and level on final approach. Full flaps in turns is doable, but keep in the forefront of your mind that full flaps get the plane very slow in a turn, the nose will lag without rudder or aileron/rudder mix, and it will lead to a stall if you don't keep the speed and power up, so to be safe, save the full flaps for the final approach and flare prior to touchdown. There is PLENTY of room under the battery board for the receiver and blue multi-function control box (MCB). I used double sided tape on the receiver and the MCB was held in place by the pressure of the considerable amount of wiring when pressed under the board. Once you have those two items under the board you'll have oodles of space for the monster 7000 MAH battery, or even an 8S setup. 90mm CoG is ideal and about a 6 - 10 elevator mix with flaps half and full respectively. Those having problems with the power output of the stock setup may not have calibrated their ESC, because I'm having no problems hitting 118 mph straight an level and 148 mph coming out of a dive. I use the Spektrum GPS for ground speed telemetry data. Nevertheless, you can't go wrong with more power and I see Motion just came out with a new high performance in-runner PNP kit. Bottom line is fly with a 6000+ pack and save full flaps for straight and level flight/ final approach and you won't be disappointed.
