“In todays RC modelling world of ARTF models where an hours work will see the model completed and ready to fly, it is easy to become complacent when building your model. I always read the supplied manuals with the models but once fully digested I put the manual to one side after all there are usually only 4 or 5 steps in the build process which entails ******** a component together. When I received my FlightLine Spitfire I decided to follow the manual step by step after all this is one not to spoil. The build process is easy but I wanted it to be perfect. Six hours had the Spitfire ready and complete including setting up the surface control movements. I always leave the prop off a model during the build and set up process for safety reasons. The Spitfire was now complete and ready to fit I took the compononets out of the bag. The back plate of the spinner is embosed and the prop locator position and orientation is easy to see. It was at this stage I made my mistake with things being so obviouse I left the instruction book on one side and installed the prop and spinner to the model. On the 4th flight one blade broke free during flight causing damaged to the Spitfire both from prop damage and the ensuing belly landing. The reaosn for this failure was due to me as I had not fitted the strengthening metal strenghtening plate. Yes I noticed this was left at the end of the build but I assumed this was a spare motor mount. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, thankfully this happened in flight and not near a person, the free flying prop blade coould have cased serious damage if this had hit anyone.”

“This replica besides its outstanding look has a superb handling in the air.I am myself a lifelong Spit. Fan and I am an abolute advocate of this excellent model made by flightline .Perhaps my only criticism is that the model is somewhat twitchy with the adviced adjustment of the elevator something easily resolved with 60 % rate and 40% expo.otherwise it is the closest thing to perfection ever made.I take out my hat at your rendition of the Spitfire”

“The model arrived double boxed the outer layer (brown cardboard box) was crushed on one end not badly but bad enough to be concerned. The model box was removed (90% polystyrene to protect the model and 10 cardboard holding the model in) there was still signs of the box being crushed but less than the outer box. I removed the cardboard top to reveal the model well packed in its polystyrene case. This had protected the model and although the package had received a significant knock on the end the model was undamaged. Very Impressive The 1600mm Mk9 Spitfire is the best foamie I have seen on the market today. The scale detail is very well represented in this model and the finish surface is by far one of the best. As careful as you wont to be you will knock the model in storage or transport leaving dents and paint loss but not with this model the finished surface is excellent. The build was straight forward and the model was complete in a steady 6 hours work. I found the differences in the decal materials (some Vinyl and some water) a bit tedious but everything was easy to install following the supplied application diagrams. Once completed this a very impressive airframe with great presence. At this stage I was pleased I had gone for the 1600mm version and not the smaller 1200mm.All flying surface values were set, CG checks and range check was completed at home as not to prolong the maiden flight once on the field. The control throws were set as per those given in the instruction manual. I used a three stage switch to operate the dual rates which was set a 100% 80% and 60% on the elevator and ailerons with 30% expo set across all settings. I used an Opti power 5300mah, 22.2V Lipo, weighing 870g/1.9lds for the maiden flight. The battery was placed as far forward as possible to achieve a slight nose down attitude on the balancing rig. This set up gave me 1665watts pulling 70a at full power, and an impressive 211w/ld of static thrust.Down to the field and maiden looming one more check of the airframe, connections and time to let here loose. The wind was 10mph gusting 16mph straight down the grass strip, 20% cloud cover, a perfect day to go flying. I taxied out onto the grass runway, it was immediately clear why there was a need for 30mm of elevator throw. I had to apply full up to prevent the tail lifting. Lined up on the runway and one more check of the control surface I began to slowly open the throttle. Great care has to be taken at this stage to release some pressure on the elevator stick. With the brisk head wind the Mk9 was ready for lift off very quickly. Throttle control and elevator compensation will keep the Mk9 on the deck and main wheals. Another few clicks of the throttle sore here rising sublimely into the air. Opening the throttle quickly showed how much power the Mk9 has. Full throttle and she comes alive to the extent of a Rino Racer. 50% throttle had the Mk9 cruising round in a scale manner. As soon as the Mk9 was airborne I felt here quite twitchy both on elevator and ailerons. Knocking the Rate switch to 80% on DR and 30% expo on the ailerons and 60% DR on the elevator and 30% expo on the Elevator soon had here with a much more pleasurable feel. Next the stall test with no flaps, I had a mixture of results on this test 60% resulting in a gentle tip stall with no preference to a particular wing and 40% a gently drop of the nose and self-recovery. Now with landing flaps deployed and gear down nothing but a drop of the nose and self-recovery with no tip stall at all. This also gave me the chance to test the pitch change when deploying the undercarriage and flaps. She kept rock steady with the suggested elevator mix. Now a dive test to check the CG, from height and speed set at a jogging pace I put the Mk9 into a 45deg dive turned off the power and held here in the dive for 5 seconds. Letting pressure of the elevator stick saw the Mk9 gently started lifting here nose, CG perfect. Now time to enjoy the performance envelope. I spent the next 5 minutes flying in a true scale manner with mixed throttle control. Now time to land bring here over head gear down for a visual check turn into circuit and apply 25mm of flap. Continuing down wind adjusting the throttle to maintain height. Turn onto the base leg and apply landing flap (40mm total). Add a slight amount of power turning into final approach, level the wings, and maintain 5-10deg of decent using the throttle. Once over the threshold and at 3 feet of the ground round out controlling the touchdown using the throttle. The Mk9 is like landing a trainer. That was a 9 minute flight with 33% capacity remaining I the 5300mah pack.”

“I made the following changes to the control surfaces after 3 more flights. The elevator was still a bit twitchy so I reduced the amount of throw by reducing the end point by 20% up and down. I didn’t make any changes to the elevator dual rate settings. The ailerons I reduced the end point on the ailerons by 10% and left the DR settings as above. Conclusion – this is by far one of the best spitfires out on the market, she has great presence I the air, solid locked in feel, good speed range and a kind manner with a very predictable and recoverable stall. FlighLine have done an awesome job with this model it is a definite keeper and a go to model for regular sorties. With the support and superb service from Motion RC and such a wonderful model what more could you want from life”
