Xwave RM400-90 Electronic Main Gear Retract for 5.1mm Shafts (Set of 3) Reviews

4.7 Rating 18 Reviews
A lot like the other comments, these units seem to function intermittently. Can’t seem to figure it out. One will stay up and then a few cycles or time passes and it works. On my second flight, one gear failed to drop and had to land with just two down. Took a chance the next day and the gear performed flawlessly. Not sure what to do. Guess I’ll fly with the gear down all the time….

They are tough retracts. On a heavy balsa plane and can handle it. This hobby requires a little ingenuity and with a little modification can easily make one a steerable nose gear. No disappointment here.

Folks !! I can’t say this loud enough! If you offer a tri-gear set…include a steerable nose gear unit !!!! I paid $115….and we had to custom make, engineer new parts,(bushings, steering arms, drilling the trunion) to make one unit steerable…which took us 2 hours of additional work…that we shouldn’t have to do…completely ridiculous…I’ve been flying RC for 51 years…with over 40 years of using retractable tri-gear units…Carl Goldberg, Kraft(electric), B&D, Spring Airs…these were all tri-gear units.Every one included one of the units, with a steerable nose gear !! So did other companies with retracts…Rhom-Air, etc…Having a 5.1 mm hole, required us to make a bushing to accept a 3/16 rod….which was more work..Functionally, the units performed well…. But don’t call it a tri-gear without a nose wheel steering unit…

These are best used in a build. It's difficult to modify plane cavities that and shaped for smaller holders. Normal retracts from Motion screw holes are closer together. Quite a bit of modifying required for use in prefaced planes

A very solid looking set. Motion doesn't tell you they are all the same.I had to disassemble one and set the trunion in a drill press and drill it to accept a steerable strut pin. Have only bench tested them so far, but they work well and sound very smooth during operation.

Build quality appears good, all metal construction. 5mm pin size is troubling as 5mm wire is hard to find( also hard to bend). I have figured a way to make one unit steer; The trundel has 2 set screws, I have milled a groove into the gear leg where the lower set screw will strike. This allows the gear leg to be captive but still rotate, the upper set screw just lightly rides on the shaft for support. A FREEWING Type F steering arm is the right diameter and should work.I am a bit concerned about the quality of the product as one unit has failed after only a few cycles on the bench during installation, waiting on a replacement now.
