Hi Earl, Our Vietnam war era dogtag replicas are made according to the same standards used in the 1950s using an indented 'deboss' font which is indeed harder to read than the modern emboss font, but is true to the era. It should be noted that deboss tags were never designed to be read by people, rather their purpose is for transcribing the dogtag information to carbon copy medical paperwork (like an old mechanical credit card machine). Nevertheless it is possible to make them easier to read by rubbing in black shoe polish (a service which we offer), as shown here: https://www.mydogtag.com/blog/debossed-darkened-letter-dog-tags Alternatively, when placing an order we suggest choosing the modern emboss font (even when making WW2, Korea, and Vietnam era tags), if legibility is critical for you.

I gave my original set to my oldest son and I needed a duplicate set for my youngest son. These dog tags were just what I wanted and everything worked out fine.

They were hard to read, which was disappointing. The metal or tin used was poor quality.

Hi Lisa, thank you for your review and for letting us know that you find them hard to read. You ordered a set of tags from the Vietnam era when all dog tags were debossed. This has the letters pressed into the metal and they are harder to read. Debossing was originally meant for a machine to make carbon copies of the information onto paper. Over time the lettering will fill in with use and wear and appear darker. This effect can be replicated using shoe polish, ink, or similar materials. We have a guide on this. https://www.mydogtag.com/blog/debossed-darkened-letter-dog-tags Our tag's are made out of stainless steel and the ones that you ordered now have a similar thickness to those issued in the 60s. Please email us directly at support@mydogtag.com so we can address any quality issues on the tags themselves. If you would like the set to be remade using embossed (raised) letters we can do that for you. They won't be regulation issue for the era however some of our customers prefer to have tags that are easier to read.
