Moen GXP50C, Continuous-Feed Garbage Disposal with Cord, Polished Stainless Steel, 1/2 HP Reviews

Works great. However, I have to say it is a bit loud. Badger that we have now in our new home is a lot more silent than this unit. Otherwise worked great.

This item was a replacement for my 12-year-old Insinkerator 1/2 hp (now called the "badger"), which literally took up 1/2 the space under my double sink. In the interest of disclosure, I used said Insinkerator quite regularly when new, and it will literally chew up chicken bones, but it will also deposit said chicken bone debris in your pipes leaving you with a big clog and plumbers bill after a few times of that sort of stuff. So said Insinkerator has been sitting mostly idle under my sink until it started leaking from the bottom on Christmas day. I would love to do away the disposal entirely but the sink is wired with a switch for it and in the interest of not explaining to the next buyer, I just wanted something to put in that won't, won't take up space, and will work in a pinch for light plate scrapings, etc.The Moen disposal advertises as it's highlight feature the "universal flange. While they are not misleading -- it can clamp right onto the flange from an Insinkerator -- I was unable to do that because to get the Insinkerator loose, I ended up applying so much force that I broke the seal between the sink and the drain flange. Rather than chase leaks and do the job twice, I just did a complete remove and reinstall. It was pretty easy. You will need plumbers putty and also probably a fine tooth saw to cut the included drain pipe to size. I didn't need to but the pipe leading to it needed to be extended about 1 cm to make up for the smaller size of the Moen vs. the Insinkerator. I had excess pipe and was able to slide the plastic compression collar to avoid having to re-plumb anything. I can't say how much nicer it looks under the sink than that beast that was leaking. As for performance, it is not loud when it's running, but there is a loud clank that happens when you first turn it on that the Insinkerator did not have. I think that is from a different motor setup... the permanent magnets perhaps. There must be a different drive connection to the blades, since the Moen does not include the kind of "jam clearing wrench" that the Insinkerator came with. Once its up to speed, the motor is as quiet, perhaps quiter, than the Insinkerator (or to my ear, higher pitched). I suspect it is spinning at a faster RPM, or the cutters are travelling faster in some way, because you do get spash-back up through the drain if you don't install the rubber boot "strainer", which is substantially more restrictive than the typical disposal boot. I did not like the Moen boot because I sit a screen strainer in my drain over my disposal, and the larger Moen boot interfered with it.As for disposing of scraps, it grinds up small table scraps perfectly fine.

A decent 1/2 HP, relatively compact disposal unit by Moen, but without sound deadening insulation. If you must have a quiet unit, I don't believe this is it. It runs at around 2600 RPM, so it isn't going to put you to sleep. For Diy:1) Make sure you or someone you know is strong enough to replace the "snap ring" which hold the components below the sink up. The snap ring is under tension, and therefore needs to be pulled apart somewhat to place it above the ridge portion of the metal down tube. The problem is that you are holding up the flange with its 3 screws while attempting to put on the snap ring. IMO, use plumber putty to hold up the flange while you install the snap ring with both hands. (and have your wife or friend push down from the sink above.#2) If at all possible, use the electrical cord that comes with the disposal. Hard wiring the unit simply doesn't make any sense even if you have to take your hard wire and construct a new electrical outlet with it. This unit does not lend itself to an easy conversion to a hard wire approach.#3) when in doubt, use plumber's putty.#4) Try not to re-use your old disposal's components...especially the discharge spout (which discharges down).

Decent noise level. Much quitter that the old one, but still there is room for improvement.

Ordered because it offered fast delivery and I needed it next day. It makes an odd sound when it's on, almost sounds like it's not working properly, but it does work. It met my needs and it was one of the least expensive ones.

This is a great alternative to the larger under-sink storage-eating standard disposals. It was no louder than any other disposals I have used and has worked quite well so far (1 month)We paired it with an air controller and it all works quite well. .Added to a sink without a disposal to deal with finicky dog food leftovers which is seems to churn up quite well.Negative: The inlet for the dishwasher is Not the standard size it claims to have. The standard hose that fits on the air gap exit, does not fit the inlet! Plan to use an adapter.

It was extremely easy to install and was, in general, quieter than the one it replaced. The reason for the three stars is that after 8 months, it stopped working. We probably turn it on once every 2 weeks. It doesn't seem to be drawing any power from the outlet even after verifying that the outlet is operational. Have contacted Moen support and warranty and will update this review based on that experience when complete.
