How are the Handle and Fittings?
My review is on two Kanmuriotoshi Zukuri Katanas. I purchased one without any changes as shown in the website listing and a second one with a different Ito, Samegawa and Saya. The first Katana without changes can only be described as perfect. The Ito wrap is well done, without flaws. The knots are tight, even and flush with the Fuchi and Kashira without any ridging that could create hot spots in the hands when griping the Tsuka. The Saya is a gorgeous deep red with a subdued speckling and contrasting black Kojiri, Kurigata with Shito-Dome and Koiguchi. The Habaki is well fitted as is the Saya. The blade fits tightly enough in the Saya that it won't drop free, but only requires a little pressure with the thumb to release and draw. Sheathing the sword is also perfect with no wobble and a smoothness that can best be described as riding on rails or ball bearings. I really like the Kanmuriotoshi Zukuri blade shape and ordered a Kanmuriotoshi Zukuri S7 Steel Tameshigiri Katana with a different colored Ito, Samegawa and Saya. The fit and finish of the Ito, fittings, etc. were equal to the first. The blades were slightly different in their length and the blade width which simply illustrates that these are handmade and slight differences are to be expected. The second sword blade was almost 1/2" longer than the first and the width was very slightly less. Just enough that while the 2nd sword could be placed in the 1st Saya, it would fall out as there was no tension from the Habaki, while the 1st sword would not fit in the other's Saya for the last couple of inches. My only disappointment in the 2nd sword is the Saya. The quality does not meet the 1st in that the quality of the finish is not as good, there is no Kojiri or Koiguchi and the fit of the blade to the Saya is poor. There is a lot of side to side movement and slop as the blade is inserted and it requires effort and care to sheathe to avoid wedging the blade in the saya preventing it from sheathing completely. For that reason, I can't give it 5 stars.

The blade shape and bo hi's are perfect with an outstanding mirror polish, and it is very sharp as a tameshigiri katana should be. The tsuba is very tight and secure as well as the kashira and fuchi with no gaps between them and the ito. The ito is very tight with great and consistent diamond shapes. The saemgawa came with an unexpected emperors node which is very cool. The Saya is a beautiful dark red sparkle with no scratches and a deep luster with a tight sageo. My only concern is that the Saya fit is very tight, requiring a dangerous amount of force to extract the blade which may have effect the ito if not fixed, but I think with a small amount of sanding I can fix this easily. I'm very pleased with the quality and craftsmanship and I finally have an affordable s5 sword which looks amazing. Also it's very light and fast and I'm sureit will cut great. I can highly recommend this sword it's awesome, and also customer service is outstanding and very considerate and professional. Excellent experience!!

This sword is tough as it can get on the katana market. It is light, well balanced and is tough as nails. Shadow Dancer in my opinion is making the best katana out of China at the moment and this is a flagship example of their quaility to price ratio that they offer. Highly recommend for this high end piece that will certainly impress anyone at the dojo.

I have a variety of katana from high end brands like Motohara and Citadel as well as very high value brands like Huawei. The Kanmuriotoshi build quality is outstanding at this price point. Many times you will see katana, particularly in tool steels, having very basic fittings and bland blades. This is not the case here. The kapok ito is very tight but comfortable. The blacked brass fuchi and kashira really complement the habaki and seppa. The quality of the habaki and seppa are also better than the typical "parts bin" models. The transitions are good and comfortable. Again, you rarely find so many good components at this price. The cutting capabilities are outstanding. This is very sharp tool steel and the Kanmuriotoshi geometry allows for a high degree of tip control and a slim profile for cutting. At 2'4", the blade is light and responsive. The bohi gives a very audible tachikaze. If I was selecting one blade to practice koryu bujutsu and tameshigiri, this would be a finalist.
