How's the Blade?
How are the Handle and Fittings?
This was the first time I purchased a Shadow Dancer katana and it has lived up to my expectations. I made 2 modifications and I highly recommend them. I added the Hishigami Pro and changed the tsuka ito to Japanese silk from the standard synthetic silk. The tsuka is extremely well wrapped and does not move. The diamonds are well formed and uniform in appearance. Looking at the blade it is polished to perfection and I can't find anything to complain about. The fit and finish are wonderful, the scabard holds the katana with just enough friction that you only have to give it a gentle push with your thumb when drawing. If all of their offerings are this good I would not hestate to purchase from them again.

How's the Blade?
How are the Handle and Fittings?
I've ordered two of the most affordable shadow dancer swords to loan out to newbies at my class and both have performed incredibly well. This is my third shadow dancer sword which I have ordered for myself for more advanced practice. Like the first two, the sword was perfect on first impression. however, when I started using it, there was a slight rattle that did not seem to affect the sword's performance but it was highly distracting. I contacted support and they sent me instructions on how to fix the issue. i also had the option of returning the sword but I opted to try the simple fix first. After 15-25 minutes of fiddling around, i did manage to fix it but still a little disappointed since I paid more for this sword than I did for the other two that had no issues. I admit that it handles better and the fittings were of better quality though.

If you want a beautiful extremely well crafted katana for under $500 this Shadow Dancer model is going to be very hard to beat. I opted for the Hishigami Pro and I would highly recommend this upgrade as well, the ito is extremely tight, the diamonds are perfect and this tsuka should last a lifetime. The Brass fuchi and kashira are of good casting quality and the menuki match the finish of the other fittings perfectly. The iron tsuba has a simple but elegant paulownia tree cutout theme and is a thin but sturdy tsuba that does not add unnecessary weight to the katana or unbalance it like a lot of other budget katana tsuba can do. The fit of the hibaki to the saya is bang on with the right amount of retention and the saya is slim and light. But the real highlight of this katana is the Beautiful Sashikomi Polished Clay Tempered 1095 Blade. The blade geometry is extremely well executed, the sword is light and fast with perfect balance. The Suguha Hamon has to be seen in person to fully appreciate it's elegance because it far exceeded expectations at this price point and the blade polish punches way above it's weight. Lastly the Geometric Yokote is also extremely well done for a sword in this price point and shows that Shadow Dancer understands how important the lines are in katana blade geometry. If you are shopping for a katana in this price range I think you will be very pleased with this offering.

Very beautifully crafted katana. The fit and finish and attention to detail is amazing at this pricepoint. Shadow Dancer does not use the the typical parts that are commonly available in longquan for their swords, and you can tell from the casting quality. Everything is tightly fitted. The ito is very tightly wrapped. The hamon, while a simple suguha, has a very nice polish. Would highly recommend this sword. The swordis team is very quick to respond to inquiries, and their customer service is great.

This was the first sword I got from Shadow Dancer and it impressed me. For the money I thought it both felt great and looked great. The polish is quite nice and the extra option to do hishigami is really worth it. The ito is among the best I have seen in reproduction swords. Kind of suppressing to see it on a sword under $500.
