I can't tell of it occurred during shipping or late in manufacturing, but the front and back right-hand corners of the sole were damaged as if it had been dropped (on two corners?). I never even got it out of the inner plastic bag, the dinged areas were sharp enough to splint the bag, which is how I noticed. Very disappointed; currently in the RMA process, though I will say their help staff were pleasant to deal with. Also; made in China, FYI

The Wood River 5-1/2 is a good heavy plane. The mass makes it great for a lot of surfacing work. The sole is nice and flat and the blade thick and sharpens well. I have used this plane quite a bit and I am happy with its performance. However, the plane I have will not work on my shooting board which is a disappointment. While the sole is dead flat the sides of the plane are not machined 90 degrees to the sole. This was a disappointment and the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 stars. By the way I have a Wood River No 6 and while mostly wonderful the sides are not 90 degrees to the sole. My Lei Neilson No. 3 smoother is flat and has sides 90 degrees to the sole so it is not my measuring device.

First of all, this plane is beautiful! The grain in the tote and knob that I received is incredible. I'm sure you're thinking who cares how it looks, how does it perform? Well, if you take the time to set it up (look up Rob Cosman setting up the 5 1/2, that's the exact process I used) it will exceed your expectations. I was able to take very thin shavings and produce a glass smooth surface on cherry and maple (those were the only two I used it on thus far). I get incredible results and I couldn't be happier.. And for the price?! You can't beat it!

Woodcraft is not a very good company. I ordered a 5 1/2 jack plane in July but cancelled when I saw the ship date was September (no day specified). I never order tools with an open ended ship date. Shopped around and in August got another email offering 15% off so I checked out the website and saw the estimated ship date was September 1. September 1 rolls around and no order status update or info about 3 months of Rob Cosman hands on workshop. On the 4th, I called for an update and they told me the estimated ship date was now October 3. I cancelled the order and called customer care. Barbara was very understanding and helpful. She found one at their corporate store in VA and said they will ship it today. We will see.

I own a lie Nielsen #41/2 and a #7, I needed something in between so I went for the wood river 51/2. This is my new favorite plane. It's the perfect weight, not too heavy to push through the work but heavy enough to stay engaged in the wood without having to bulldog down on the work. The fit and finish is excellent I was taking full length full width full length wispy thin silky smooth shavings within 40 minutes of opening the box with some blade honing of just a micro bevel and using the ruler trick on the flat of the blade. Buy this plane you won't be sorry
