“…more perfect for the struggle.” — In talking with one of my sons, we realized he needed a cutting board for his apartment. Instead of purchasing one, we decided to checkout our local Woodcraft store had any kits in stock. The variation of kit sizes and styles available in-store made choosing a kit fun. The gentleman who assisted us offered tips on construction and finishing. The correct glue and oil was organized on the end cap with additional information about cutting board kit projects. For assembly what we learned is a little extra time to get the pieces lined up will save a lot of time during the rough sanding phase. I recommend at least four clamps and two short lengths of 1”x8” to sandwich the front and back face of project during the glue up. We stated with 60 grit sandpaper on a random orbit palm sander but the project Task became more satisfying when we changed from using the palm sander to a belt sander. After getting the faces to a flat-ish state we switched to random orbit palm sanders for the 80-120 grit. Very satisfying to see the cutting board take shape through this process. The finished project seems to be as strong and useful as the best cutting boards you can buy. If you are saying to yourself, “i don't have the space or tools for this project” WoodCraft stores have you covered. Sign up for their cutting board kit class and take advantage of your woodcraft store’s wood shop and instructor guidance. I highly recommend the Woodcraft cutting board kits. The project was a “bonding” experience for my son and me.

I purchased this kit awhile back and attempted to assemble it this weekend. Upon attempting a dry run of the board, I found that three of the larger boards were either not parallel, or were so bowed and out of square that it was impossible to joint and plane them back to square. In addition, several of the thinner pieces were so rough that it was almost impossible to plane or sand them down into usable pieces. Given the price, I expected better quality material. While I’ve purchased a few of the other kits and have had great success with those, I will not be purchasing this particular kit again.

For this price point, u would think the pieces would be cut of equal thickness to maintain symmetry as seen in the picture of the finished board, which is an impressive mix of woods. However, the pieces I received were not all cut to even thickness, specially the thin maple strips. Some of the maple pieces were tapered, some had huge saw marks which required sanding or planing...but these thin pieces could not tolerate any sanding or planing, or their thickness was greatly different than the maple strips that needed no work. The overall board would loose the symmetry with the other thin maple pieces. So I ended up milling my own maple strips to make this board work. The thicker pieces also needed hand planning to get the sides flat for a clean look after glue up. I thought the benefit of buying this ready to glue cutting board wood, was to simplify the process? Great concept, nice woods, but their needs to be some quality control. Turned out to be quite the long process vs. just glue up, edge treatment and sanding.

Every single piece of wood has two stickers. The P65 warning sticker comes off clean but woodcraft inventory sticker did not causing a lot of frustration. Would not recommend.

Purchased this kit. One of the boards wasn't even close to planed on two sides. Only found it after I had it glued up. Asked for a replacement kit. Second kit had the same problem but on multiple boards. Really disappointed with the quality control for the cost of these.

Great kit. Just enough extra work to make it feel like it's yours. I used tung oil on mine, really made the grains pop.

My "ready to glue kit" that is "surfaced 4 sides" looks like it came straight out of the mill. Saw marks all over, splintering edges, and several burn marks. I attempt to talk to customer service in private to resolve this issue and they say "Our kits are surface treated and may contain remaining tool marks that would require light sanding." If it is surfaced 4 sides then maybe light sanding would be an acceptable answer, but this was a total waste of time and a bust on a Christmas gift for my mother. I'd have three times better results cutting and gluing boards straight from my table saw.
