MJ Platt & Co. B Square Reviews

Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

Named for its shape, the B square is a tool for 'feeling' square as much as seeing it, particularly in situations where you are eyeballing for square in two axis at once. The bows allow it to be held comfortably in a variety of positions and also brace the working faces giving it an inherently rigid form. The square is intended to augment the user's sensory accuracy for the final cuts of a chiselling operation that produce the mating surfaces of joints, after the bulk of the waste has been removed. For example paring the shoulders of a tenon to the gauge line, or trimming the ends of a mortice plumb. You can also use it with a fine saw for the first few strokes that establish a nice vertical kerf, or just use it as a square to check your work.

Bought this to help with the japanese saw and the flush cut saw cutting straighter. As some say it's smaller than you imagine but I don't have massive hands so perfect for me...

I have mixed feelings about it. I used a small square prior to purchasing this, not that the square was better, it had it's difficulties. Nonetheless, I'm debating if this tool was worth the price. It's not "easy" to use. It's a bit too small and despite it theorically making sense -in my mind- how to use it, it takes practice.

I was initially a wee bit 'iffy' about this square as I detest woodworking 'gizmos' with a passion but as Christmas was nearly upon us and as I have the breaking strain of a Kit-Kat, one found it's way under the tree on the big day. As you'd expect, it's properly packaged, being wrapped in the requisite brown paper and contained in a cushty little black box. It's an interesting little tool, 'little' being the operative word but having given it a trial run at the bench on New Years Day, not withstanding a slightly fuzzy head, it does actually work very well. For example, to pare in the vertical mode, the two middle fingers fit into the holes (and they will fit unless you've got digits like the finest pork sausages) and the forefinger wraps around the chisel blade, keeping it firmly held against the B Square. Push down on the blade with the other hand and a square cut is guaranteed. A very pleasant little addition to the arsenal on the 'Tool Wall' and one which will see some serious action in due course.

This square is great for what it’s intended to do however it could be improved by making it bigger. People with big fingers will find it very difficult to use. My fingers aren’t that big but I feel it could be better if it was larger. Well machined and presented though.

The square arrived yesterday and I am very pleased with the tool. The square it perfectly designed for my hands. The operating surfaces are very square as checked by dial indicators. The black finish is smooth and well made. The small chamfer at the corner provides the perfect clearance for using a chisel or saw edge during use. Finally, the non working edges are nicely rounded for a perfect fit in your pocket or work apron. Overall a job well done!

After a bad injury I was left with a hand that was weak and could hold a chisel securely. Not only does it allow me to hold a chisel securely but also safety. So thank tou. Great jig, it will train your hands. Happy woodworking
