I'm only half way through. As a novice this is great - covers the basics in a way that is clear and understandable. Want to do more - looking forward to challenges and practices.

A well thought out, wide-ranging and novel course and approach to the topic for me - especially how Rankin has chosen to incorporate a broad range of perspectives (the model and photographer interviews), alongside the more 'nuts and bolts' aspects of photography like use of light, depth of field, aperture, camera types etc. I also liked the attempt to nurture community via the practical assignments, where students are encouraged to share their work on socials using the BBC Maestro and Rankin tags. When I do get round to doing this 'homework'(!) I like the idea that it could be a shared experience, with supportive like minded folk - it can after all be quite a solitary hobby; possibly even intimidating for a new generation looking to skill up in (and possibly even work in) this field, so - GREAT idea. ENJOYABLE COURSE, THX.

Quite good content particularly over how Rankin interacts with the portrait sitter. Also very helpful, pragmatic and friendly and simple technical advice.

An Introduction to Photography; Rankin Thanks a million for sharing a course loaded with valuable skills of Photography and bringing on Giles Duley; I definitely resonate with his perspective on violence and wars, he sees a silver lining into chaos.

My biggest takeway was how important collaboration is when making a photo, particulalry relating to portraint photography. Special shout out to Giles Duley - love his humanity. Would be great to see other photography courses aimed at other topics (e.g. landscape, architecture).

I've just started this course and am enjoying it very much. It has encouraged me to explore my phone camera more and not just take photos on Automatic. Rankin's warm personality shines through and he interviews other photographers who provide different perspectives.

It is disappointing that the content is dominated by lengthy wordy pieces, including with guests, concerning high level thoughts and reflections about personal attributes and qualities that may help make a good photographer. Many technical aspects are covered but only as an overview of available functionality and with minimal content as how can be used to improve photographs in practice. I had assumed the whole package would be similar to the useful Extra Tips in section 31, but this is only 2 minutes long.

Hi Neil, Thanks for your review. We value every BBC Maestro customer, and really value your feedback. All courses have detailed course notes to accompany them, which a lot of learners find really useful when watching a course, especially when completing the course exercises to gain more practical insights and a chance to try some new things out! I hope you've had a chance to give these a go for Rankin's course. I hope this helps, but feel free to contact our amazing customer service team at support@bbcmaestro.com if you would like more support! Best, Rebecca
