Baby Chicks: Black Copper Marans Female Reviews

4.8 Rating 147 Reviews
My latest chick just arrived. She is stunning. I have a 6 year old hen that is also so beautiful and lays a dark egg though slowing down as she ages and I didn't want to be without a black copper marans as I know she won't be around forever. I believe that My Pet Chicken bought show stock in the past for their breeding program and it shows. My newest girl is already pulling on my heart strings. She has that intelligent gleam in her eye and now I'm trying to find the perfect name to bestow on this sweet little girl.

She's smaller than the rest of my flock and lays a dark brown egg, but not as dark as I feel it should be as she is a Black Copper Maran. I know there's always variation, but she lays as dark as my welsummers. She has a wonderful temperament and although she doesn't lay very regularly, I still would purchase this breed again.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review and for giving our Black Copper Marans a try! You're absolutely right; there can be natural variation in egg color, even within the same breed. While Marans are known for their chocolate-brown eggs, the depth of color can be influenced by many factors. They can lay an egg anywhere from dark brown, to deep reddish-brown, to medium brown with many dark speckles. The very darkest eggs you receive from your lovely Black Copper Marans hen will be her first egg, and the eggs will lighten ever so slightly with each egg, up until her annual molt. After that, you will once again see her darkest egg. All that said, we're glad to hear she's a sweet addition to your flock, even if she’s on the petite side. Her wonderful temperament sounds like a real win, and we truly appreciate your openness to adding this breed to your flock again. Thank you for sharing your experience with us—it helps others make informed decisions, and it helps us continue to grow and improve!

baby chick is a few weeks old and doing well. Too young yet to see the brown color of the eggs.

Thank you for sharing this adorable photo! Black Copper Marans will begin to lay around 6 months of age-unless the weather is very cold and then they may delay that first precious egg until warmer weather! With time, she will be laying those gorgeous dark chocolate eggs.

I purchased 2 straight run BCM and got one pullet and one cockerel which I am happy with! They are happy and healthy birds.
