“We received our RIR last May and she is now a healthy 13 month old hen who is both pretty and friendly (not at all a bully). She started laying at 19 weeks and reliably provides us with 4-5 medium to large eggs per week (usually weighing ~60g). Several of the RIR reviews indicate that their girls produce 5-6 large to XL eggs per week, but our girl has been slightly less ambitious ;-). She has NOT been broody, which is a huge plus in my opinion.”
Rhode Island Reds are a great addition to any backyard flock! It sounds like your girl is laying about the right size egg for her breed as a "large" size egg is typically 56.8 grams. An "extra large" egg would be 63.8 grams and that would be very unsusual for this breed. The Reds are very very friendly birds - I have a few myself and they are the ones that tend to follow me around just to hang out in the yard :-) We are happy to hear that she is doing well and bringing you enjoyment with her presence.
