Baby Chicks: Rhode Island Red Female Reviews

4.9 Rating 47 Reviews
Koobish, our Rhode Island Red died, she was sweet and a good layer and I was going to teach her how to play the keyboard, but she died before she could see it happen. She was a pretty chesnut color and had a quiet disposition, she also like climbing on things, but her kindness came back like a boomerang.

Honey is so pretty! She has pretty hackles and lays medium brown eggs, she is at the top of the pecking order and her egg song is funny

I got 4 hens and a rooster, the rooster recently reached maturity and he is still so well behaved. His crow is a joke, but he’s fine with me grabbing and poking at him. I have one hen that is just a headache, not in a bad way. She’s really loud and screams every time I go near her but I still adore her. I have another hen that’s still small, she keeps up really well with my leghorns and every time I pick her up she passes out. I love all of my birds, can’t wait for them to lay eggs.

Our Hazel is one of our Friendliness chickens! Super talkative and tolerates being picked up and handled by youngsters. I don’t understand why people give them a bad reputation, our Hazel would win even the toughest heart over in a beat! I won’t go without saying that If you are thinking about getting one...make sure you have the space and don’t have many competitive chickens, as they prefer to be head hen! We have a big 18x12’ run, so we have never had aggression issues. I also wouldn’t recommend getting a Roo, I’ve seen in person what they can do. (My younger cousin has a huge scar on his face from one.) every chicken is different, though. Just some food for thought! Great chickens if you make sure you have the space and docile Hens to make it work!

We accidentally got a rooster instead of a hen. He turned out to be quite the little gentleman. He is great with our kids and even followed my oldest kid around the yard in the summer. He is'nt the great roo, in terms of breeding. No chicks yet. But my hens aren't the biggest fan of letting a dude, come into their girl squad. So there that. He does like to strut his stuff around the yard and let his presence be known. He is quite the strange Roo and I kind of prefer that way!

I ordered two Rhode Island Reds because I heard about how many big eggs they lay. I wasn't expecting them to be super friendly chickens. Flame is a very curious chicken and is ok with a couple pets. She also loves to eat out of my hand. The other one Flare is nervous of a lot of movement but will eat out of my hand. I am looking forward to when they start laying eggs.

My RIR from MPC was the first of my chicks to lay. She was flighty but not mean. I see a lot of RIRs that friends/neighbors get from TSC and such and mine was by far the most beautiful with darker red lacing on the tip of her feathers. She was killed in a dog attack, sadly. I ordered another one for my mixed flock for this spring. Can’t wait!
