As I Saw It - Tuia 19 Reviews

4.7 Rating 203 Reviews
It was so good to have all the things needed to successfully learn about this time in history! The resources were great to use and engaging for the students, and more to the point well beyond what I have the means to organise or create myself. As time went on the students became a little more invested in the stories of the people who were there and asking questions about the other peoples stories (as they pertained to their own person). An understanding grew that there the people who were there saw things a different way and that experiences we have can shape the way we view events. Having the guess who game was also a really nice touch to finish off learning - how well could we remember our person. It's something we will come back to again to get across the idea that just because the unit of work has finished, they are still important people and events to remember.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? As above. Ngā mihi nui mō te rauemi nei, hei whakatenatena i a mātou te hunga kaiako ki te whakawhānui i o mātou nei whakaaro.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Finally we have material featuring a Māori perspective. New Zealand History is very important, moreso Māori History as it can begin to change the perception of reasoning behind the decline of Māori in Education attainment.
The Tuia 250 was a great resource to use as it highlighted the importance of seeing things from a number of perspectives. Also, being a bilingual class, we were very interested in the viewpoint of Māori at the time and using hindsight to gauge how important/ pivotal these interactions were. Our class had limited time to dissect the information in the pack, as we were hit by COVID 19 restrictions and lockdowns. Upon returning to school our overall direction and focus has somewhat changed, making it hard to return to instruction kaupapa pre-COVID.

How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I asked my .1teacher to complete the kit with my students. So unable to comment here
This kit had lovely resources. But it was pitched too high for my year 5/6 students and they struggled

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The unit helped my students to work not only closely together but to listen to each other and learn from each other. It enabled them to understand that there is usually more than one side to a story and to actively seek these out and not settle for one ve
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has made all of us think about the truths and the facts, it has highlighted some areas that I know I need to be thinking on a deeper level within my own practice.
Amazing kit, our kids delved into the past and mystery. The resources were such high quality and our students nominated and formed a special committee to put our classroom display together - which we are proud of and makes our classroom look really impressive! We have had so many comments and questions from students and teachers who can't help but stop to look and learn.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? The students absolutely loved the opening task and the timeline. They were really shocked at how easy it was to point the finger or feel so sure of one perspective being the only way to look at something.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I love teaching NZ History, but this reminded me that there is more than just the Treaty and Land Wars.
This kit was excellent for teaching NZ history. It was engaging and taught the student not only about historical facts, but about bias and perspective. The resources were really attractive and easy to use.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? This kit allowed each of my students to become immersed in their character and their perspective of the event that unfolded. The students were able to see that their perspective isn't always the right or correct one. This then translated into other areas
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This kit has clearly shown the importance of NZ history and incorporating it into the curriculum. It creates a full picture of where we have come from and how that translates into where we are going.
This kit was great, well put together and easy to use. The students loved unpacking the event from each perspective and it allowed for very creative writing opportunities. The students were able to translate the event and begin to incorporate the use of Te Reo Maōri into their writing.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? When we first introduced the kit, and we looked at a fictional issue that occurred at school, it was interesting for the students to see that everyone had a different opinion based on where they were as well as their own personal beliefs. Also, when we t
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? I have realised how much we don't always look at differing perspectives and from different points of views in regards to history. We need to discuss what stories may have been forgotten or left out and why.
The As I saw it kit was fantastic to do with the kids in class. They had a lot of fun with the Guess Who aspect, and learnt a lot about the early Maori and British to NZ. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown interruptions and time frame for this, we didn't get to complete it indepth as much as I would have liked, but I still feel it was very beneficial and worthwhile.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Great to relate to ourselves, difficult to relate to the Tuia 250 story.
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? Personally it was great for my and my own knowledge. in terms of children it prompted some discussion but this wasn't derived from the actual kit itself and used things from outside resources based around the topic
This kit was beautifully made with amazing resources. My classroom is a wide mix of year 6-7 students who have different abilities in all curriculum areas. I found this kit very hard to pitch to my children and the activities difficult to complete. I wish I could have done the resources justice but I feel as though the activities were too tricky and disengaging for my children.
